Sceaux: Parkland, Garden Art and Culture
Accommodation in Sceaux
Explore Sceaux through its different facets: the parkland of the Domaine départemental de Sceaux and cultural traces in the town. To help plan your stay, the selection of themes offers guidance: nature, exercise, garden art and craftsmanship provide different points of interest.
Parkland and Nature
The Domaine départemental de Sceaux covers 152 hectares and is managed according to exemplary ecological principles. It is considered a biodiversity reservoir: bats, grasshoppers, beetles, birds and amphibians, among others, live there. The animals feed, nest and reproduce on the estate. Nature enthusiasts will therefore find not only an extensive parkland landscape here, but also a place with a wide variety of habitats.
The park’s design includes vistas laid out by Le Nôtre. These are complemented by reconstructed parterres of boxwood and colored gravel. These features give the gardens a clearly designed character: the vistas guide the eye through the park, while the reconstructed patterns bring design and materials together.
Exercise and Routes on the Estate
The fitness trail forms a loop of more than 3 km through wooded, hilly and shady areas. It includes ten permanently installed exercise stations. Its length, terrain and sequence of stations provide practical guidance if you plan to make exercise a focus of your stay.
Another route is the PR 26 hiking trail. It runs through the Domaine de Sceaux, alongside the park’s basins, cascades and vistas. The two options have different emphases: the fitness trail is laid out as a loop with exercise stations, while PR 26 passes the park features mentioned above. You can choose whether you prefer a fitness route or a hiking trail alongside water features and vistas.
Craftsmanship and Culture
Rue Houdan is considered the oldest pedestrian street in ĂŽle-de-France. It is also known for its many craftspeople, recognized for their savoir-faire. The street thus complements the park and nature themes with an urban focus on craftsmanship and design.
The Musée du Domaine départemental de Sceaux offers guided tours, workshops, classes and themed conferences. Dates may change, so check the current program if you are planning a particular visit or event.
The architecture and collections of the Domaine also offer various points of interest. The Orangerie of the Château de Sceaux houses sculptures from the gardens dating to the time of Colbert. The Pavillon de l'Aurore is an exceptional 17th-century garden pavilion. Its dome was painted by Charles Le Brun on the theme of Aurora. While the Orangerie puts sculptures at the center, the painted dome defines the pavilion’s artistic impression.
The architectural heritage also includes the surviving main building of the former Faïencerie de Sceaux at 1 rue des Imbergères. It adds a testament to the town’s former faience production to its cultural history.
