Meudon: Forest, Ponds and Cultural History
Accommodation in Meudon
In Meudon, you can make nature and culture the focus of your stay. Forest paths and ponds define one side of the area, while the Villa des Brillants and Hangar Y offer other perspectives on art, architecture and history. This makes it possible to choose your destination based on the interests that matter to you on your trip.
Forest Paths and Ponds in Meudon
The Forêt domaniale de Meudon is home to numerous ponds that shape the landscape. They are popular spots for walkers, people taking part in sports and anglers. Water is therefore as much a part of the landscape as the forest. If you would like to include a walk in your plans, the Balade des étangs de Meudon is a named route that follows 8 km of forest paths.
The Étangs de Meudon are biodiverse places in a forest close to the city. Their significance goes beyond the landscape: the ponds also play an important role in forest ecosystems. Amphibians such as frogs, toads and newts, dragonflies, and birds such as grey herons and mallards depend on these habitats. These animal groups give an impression of the diversity of habitats associated with the ponds.
The history of the pond landscape is also linked to the surroundings of the Château de Meudon. Most of the ponds were created in the 17th century to supply water to the château’s gardens: first by Abel Servien, Marquis de Sablé and de Boisdauphin, then by François Michel Le Tellier, Marquis de Louvois. The forest and water landscape today is thus connected to a specific historical use.
Rodin’s Artist’s Home at the Villa des Brillants
Auguste Rodin lived at the Villa des Brillants for the last 20 years of his life. The Musée Rodin Meudon brings together the house, studio and park, offering a chance to discover Rodin’s sculptures and world. The three areas provide different ways to experience the site: the artist’s home, his workplace and the park as part of the museum complex.
The Villa des Brillants presents the artist’s home, with a dining room, an adjoining drawing room and a studio. The focus is therefore not only on Rodin’s work, but also on the setting in which the artist’s home is presented. If you are interested in art and a sculptor’s way of life, this emphasis offers a different perspective from an outing to the forest paths or ponds.
Hangar Y: Exhibition History and Gardens
Hangar Y was built in 1879 using sections of the Galerie des Machines from the World’s Fair. The 9-hectare site in Parc de Chalais-Meudon also preserves part of a formal French garden dating from the 17th century. Hangar Y thus brings together the history of the building and an older element of the garden.
“L’Épopée du Hangar Y” is a 30-minute immersive and interactive mixed-reality experience. Visitors use provided headsets to step into the site’s past. The experience may not be available at all times, depending on the program; check the dates if you want to include it as a fixed part of your stay.
