Hlohovec lies at the foot of the Považský Inovec, and the Váh flows through the town. A trip to Hlohovec District offers a variety of themes, from its castle and park to viewpoints, trails and protected landscapes. Experiences range from the medieval castle in Hlohovec to Leopoldov’s fortress history and the nature of Sedliská.

Castle, Park and Views in Hlohovec

Hlohovec Castle originally began as a medieval castle dating from the 13th century. Since autumn 2018, a reconstructed section of the castle building has once again been open to the public. As current access conditions may change, it is best to check them before your visit. In Zámocký Park, there is a small stone grotto with a spring and a stone relief of Neptune—a distinctive detail for anyone wishing to explore the park as well as the castle’s history.

The Šianec viewpoint offers a panorama across the Dolnovážska Lowland to the Little Carpathians. You can reach it on foot from the Empírové divadlo; by car, the described route follows road II/507 towards Bojničky.

Two Trails, Different Highlights

The Zámocký poznávací okruh is a walking trail with five stops and a length of approximately 2.6 km. The Šulekovský poznávací okruh is a circular trail through Šulekovo with four stops and a length of approximately 2.9 km. It focuses on the history, flora and fauna of the Váh region. The second circular trail is listed as slightly longer, but has one fewer stop. The approximate distances and themes can help you choose between the two based on what you would most like to explore.

Monastery and Starry Skies

The refectory of the Franciscan monastery has a Renaissance-Baroque stucco ceiling dating from 1648, as well as an exhibition of historic furniture. The architectural detail and exhibition add a distinctive cultural and historical dimension to a visit. Hlohovec Observatory has the second-largest telescope in Slovakia. It offers stargazing and projections simulating the movements of the night sky. As facilities and programs may change, check the current offerings in advance.

Protected Nature at Sedliská

The Sedliská Nature Reserve near Hlohovec protects xerothermic, steppe-like vegetation with numerous large-flowered pasque flowers and is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Area administration manages the site, which is subject to the fourth level of protection. Protected animals recorded there include the European green lizard, Aesculapian snake, stag beetle and praying mantis. Alongside castles, architecture and viewpoints, this adds a clearly defined nature experience to the range of travel options.

Fortress History and a Wine Event

Construction of Leopoldov Fortress began on 19 September 1665. It was built according to a system considered modern for its time, as a star-shaped fortification with ramparts, bastions and walls. Its use is institutionally restricted, so check in advance whether a visit is possible. During construction of the fortress, a bridge was also built between 1665 and 1669 over one arm of the heavily meandering Váh.

At the 17th edition of Fraštacké putovanie za vínom on 26 April 2025, 48 wineries took part and 1,600 guests attended the event.
