Leopoldov brings together a varied fortress history and distinctive church architecture with the Štrkovisko wetland. These themes span a fortress built in 1669, a church consecrated in 1712 and a landscape formed after gravel and sand extraction. This gives you different points of interest side by side: built heritage, sacred architecture and a body of water with ecological significance.

Fortress and Prison

Leopoldov Fortress was built in 1669 as an anti-Ottoman fortress with a regular hexagonal ground plan. After losing its military significance, it was converted into a prison; it has served this purpose continuously since 1856. The two dates mark different stages: 1669, its military origins, and 1856, the beginning of its prison use, which continues to this day. The exhibition on the prison service adds another local perspective. Its first themed room contains exhibits on the history of Leopoldov Prison and the earlier history of penal institutions. The room thus links the history of a specific institution with the longer development of the penal system.

Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola

The Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola was consecrated on 15 October 1712 and dedicated to this saint. The Baroque building has a single nave and a segmentally closed presbytery; the sacristy was added later. The built-in tower is designed in the Romantic Neo-Romanesque style. “Single nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; the presbytery is the choir and altar area. These terms describe different architectural aspects: the layout of the interior and the design of the tower. In front of the church stands a Rococo Marian column dating from the mid-18th century. Its style adds a distinct artistic accent alongside the church’s Baroque architecture.

The restored pillory (pranier) is also considered a traditional symbol of the town of Leopoldov. Its role as a town symbol is a different connection to local history from the church’s religious dedication.

Štrkovisko Leopoldov and the Wetlands

Štrkovisko Leopoldov is a wetland of local significance in the cadastral area of Leopoldov. It formed after gravel and sand extraction and has the character of a natural standing body of water. Thus, its origins in mineral extraction coincide with its classification as a wetland. Its only designated uses are short-term managed recreation and sport fishing; the wetland’s protection regulations apply. The wetlands in the cadastral area of Leopoldov are significant overall for the migration and nesting of water and water-dependent birds; they provide habitats for rare and endangered plants and other aquatic animals.
