Discover Freistadt: Castle History, Wine Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Freistadt
Freistadt (Hlohovec) combines historic buildings with scenic and themed trails. Hlohovec lies at the foot of the Považský Inovec between the historic cities of Trnava and Nitra. The Váh, Slovakia’s longest river, flows through the town. This offers different ways to explore the destination: the history surrounding the castle and theatre, protected nature, and trails that focus on specific themes.
Castle and Theatre History
Hlohovec Castle stands on the site of a medieval castle first mentioned in 1113. It acquired its present appearance through renovations commissioned by the then landlord, Jozef Erdődy, towards the end of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century. The Empírové divadlo, dating from 1802, is located within the castle grounds. It is currently considered the oldest surviving theatre building in Slovakia. The castle and theatre thus represent different periods of local history: the castle site dates back to the Middle Ages, while the castle’s present appearance and the theatre are associated with later centuries.
The historic centre is also part of this cultural picture. It covers about 15 hectares and has been designated a conservation area since 1 March 1993. Its precise area and designation date make the protected old town a distinct historical landmark alongside the castle grounds. Those interested in architectural history will find more than a single monument in Freistadt: the castle site, its renovation history, the theatre and the conservation area each tell a different part of the story.
Themed Trails with Different Highlights
The Zámocký poznávací okruh educational trail is 2.6 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 62 metres. From the entrance to the castle park, it passes the pond, grotto, castle, theatre and garden terraces before returning to the starting point. The route links several named stops in a single loop. The Sedliská educational trail has different dimensions: it is one kilometre long, has an elevation difference of 80 metres and includes four stops. By comparison, Sedliská is shorter but has more elevation gain than the Zámocký okruh.
Another highlight is the educational trail through the Hlohovec vineyards. It follows an easy, accessible circular route along a blue-marked hiking trail and has seven stops. Topics include the vineyards, local winemakers, the history of winegrowing and traditional grape varieties characteristic of the region. While the Zámocký okruh places its stops around the castle park and buildings, the vineyard trail focuses on local winegrowing history.
Nature and Views
The Sedliská Nature Reserve covers six hectares in the cadastral area of Hlohovec. It protects plant communities adapted to warm, dry conditions, along with the animal communities associated with them. The protected, rare and endangered species named here include the large-flowered pasque flower (Pulsatilla grandis), a species of European importance, and the spring pheasant’s eye (Adonis vernalis), a species of national importance. Along with information on length, elevation difference and stops, the Sedliská educational trail also provides access to a specifically identified natural area.
The Šianec viewpoint is a distinctive landmark for views across the landscape. At an elevation of 296 metres, it offers panoramas across Hlohovec and the region, over the Dolnovážska Lowland as far as the Little Carpathians, the Trnavská Upland and the White Carpathians. The panorama described also includes cities and villages stretching from Trnava to Piešťany. Hlohovec Castle Park is considered one of Slovakia’s most significant parks for its natural and cultural value.
More Ways to Discover Freistadt
The Hlohovec Observatory and Planetarium enables astronomical observations. It houses a telescope described as the second-largest in Slovakia. The Vlastivedné múzeum offers another perspective on local history: it preserves more than 260 recorded finds from river sediments, which may be classified as archaeological finds. Together, these topics complement the architectural and natural history with astronomical observation and finds from the river area. When hiking, it is advisable to check current trail conditions before setting out.
