Tekolďany: History, Church Art and Landscape
Accommodation in Tekolďany
Landscape and Early History
Tekolďany lies in the western part of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina, in the upper reaches of the Tekoldiansky potok. The treeless municipal area consists of young Tertiary sediments covered by loess. The stream and the surrounding hilly landscape shape the setting of the village. The upper reaches refer to the upper section of the stream and also place Tekolďany within the loess-covered hills.
The first written mention of Tekolďany dates from 1310, but settlement began as early as the Neolithic. A settlement of the Želiezovce culture was located in the area. The two facts answer different questions: the archaeological settlement points to early habitation, while 1310 marks the first written record. Historical forms of the name include Tekulchen, Tukulchen, Tökőld, Tekolgyan, Tekolgyany and Tekolďany. These variants show that the village appears under different names in historical sources; today, its name is Tekolďany.
Church Architecture and Artworks
The Roman Catholic Church of Panny Márie Ružencovej is a single-nave building with a polygonal presbytery. The presbytery is the choir, and polygonal describes its many-sided shape. The asymmetrical tower is attached to the side façade of the nave. The main nave, choir and attached tower are therefore distinct features of the building. The church contains two former altarpieces by the painter J. Zanussi, who came from Trnava. One of them is signed and dated 1804. The Neoclassical bell tower, Zvonica, dates from 1945. The two dates refer to different objects: 1804 to one of the paintings, and 1945 to the bell tower.
Walks, Nature Trail and Night Sky
The Tekoldiansky potok and surrounding hilly landscape create a picturesque setting suitable for walks. Conditions for informal walks can vary by season, so take this into account when planning. Low light pollution also makes the area a suitable place for observing the night sky.
Tekolďany belongs to the Poniklec microregion. The 10.3 km-long Náučný chodník mikroregiónu Poniklec nature trail is located in this microregion. It is easy, self-guided and open year-round. The rating describes the level of difficulty, while the length and self-guided format provide further points to consider when planning. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
