Madunice: Monuments, the Váh and local history
Accommodation in Madunice
Madunice combines a historic focus in the town center with nature-related attractions and a cycling route southeast of the town. For planning your trip, the interests are easy to distinguish: the church, sculpture group and Ján Hollý monument highlight the town’s history; the Váh and the local gravel pits represent its natural side. Which aspect you focus on depends on whether culture, nature or a cycling trip is your priority.
Monuments and local history
The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of Our Lady, Queen of Angels, is in the town center and is a national cultural monument. Built from 1799 to 1806 on the site of an earlier church, it has an older Renaissance core. Its architectural history therefore brings together an older core and a later construction phase. Those interested in religious architecture can view the church both through its Renaissance core and its clearly dated construction.
Behind the church, also in the town center, is a sculpture group depicting Saints Wendelin, Roch and Florian. The Municipality of Madunice erected it in 1839; this group is also a national cultural monument. In the park opposite the church stands the Ján Hollý monument, likewise classified as a national cultural monument. The statue is larger than life, made of sandstone and created by the academic sculptor Vincent Vosmik; it was unveiled in 1923.
The historical picture also includes the Ján Hollý Memorial Parish House. This national cultural monument dates back to 1650. Its historical reference therefore reaches further back than the dates given here for the other monuments and buildings: the church was built from 1799 to 1806, the sculpture group was erected in 1839, and the statue was unveiled in 1923. This timeline offers a connecting thread for visitors who want to discover Madunice through its history and monuments.
The Váh, gravel pits and cycling route
The Váh runs through the cadastral area of Madunice and is part of a nationwide biocorridor there. The Váh biocorridor and the local gravel pits are together classified as valuable natural complexes. Its nationwide classification places the river within a broader ecological context. The activities specifically mentioned differ by location: fishing is possible on the Váh in Madunice, while hunting is possible at the local gravel pits.
The Vážska cyklomagistrála runs southeast of Madunice. It passes the Madunice hydroelectric power plant and several gravel pits. The cycling route is therefore linked to a different location than the monuments in the town center. Conditions and completed route sections can change, so check the current route status before your trip.
A dated event highlight
On July 18, 2026, the Municipality of Madunice held the 13th edition of the Gulášmajster competition, a public cooking contest. As a past event, the competition complements the historic monuments with an example of public community life.
