Liptovské Revúce combines nature and cultural experiences with specific hiking opportunities. When planning your trip, details such as varying route lengths, walking times and seasonal information are especially useful. Folk architecture and local traditions also give the village its own cultural focus.

Valley and River Landscape

The Revúcka Valley runs from north to south and forms the boundary between the Low Tatras and the Veľká Fatra. The Revúca River rises below Krížna, flows through the valley and joins the Váh in Ružomberok. The landscape can therefore be understood both through the valley and along the course of the river.

One notable natural area is the Prielom Teplého potoka. The gorge section is about 180 metres long and up to 20 metres deep. Its described features include karst relief, travertine and erosion formations created by the river; the protected area also includes the 2.4-metre-high lower waterfall of the Teplý potok. The Prielom has been protected as a natural monument since 1984 and lies in the Teplá Valley within the cadastral area of Liptovské Revúce. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads there from the Teplé forestry lodge. Check trail conditions before your hike.

Hiking Routes and Time Planning

The Čierny Kameň educational trail starts in Stredná in Liptovské Revúce and ends in Vyšná near Konštrukta. It passes through the Čierny Kameň National Nature Reserve (NPR) and the Ploská saddle. The route is listed as 9.5 kilometres long and taking about five hours; there are eight information boards or stations along the way. The trail is self-guided, can be walked in either direction and is suitable as a circular route in summer and winter.

For comparison, the route from Liptovské Revúce (Výšné) to Krížna is 15 kilometres long and listed as taking six hours. It is considered a moderately difficult alpine hike and is also a ski touring route. For ski touring, it is designated for the period from 15 December to 30 April; avalanche safety equipment is listed as necessary gear. The time estimates and different types of routes can help you plan your hikes around the time available and the activity you have in mind.

The Čierny Kameň educational trail can be reached from the SAD bus stop Liptovské Revúce, Stredná–požiarna zbrojnica. As transport information can change, check local bus details before travelling. For the route to Krížna, you should also take seasonal conditions into account before setting off.

Borišov is also an important landmark in the mountain landscape: this 450-hectare state nature reserve protects communities across up to four forest vegetation zones. The trail from Ploská leads to Chata pod Borišovom, a mountain hut open year-round at a junction of several marked hiking trails. If you would like to stop there, check current offerings in advance. The traditional ascent of Borišov takes place every year on 30 December; before taking part, check the announcement for that year.

In Záhorovo, the Ferrata Dve veže opened as a protected route through challenging mountain terrain, with fixed safety cables and iron rungs. Check current access conditions before visiting.

Folk Architecture and Local Culture

Vyšná Revúca is the oldest part of the municipality and preserves its best-maintained folk architecture. This includes wooden houses dating from 1800 to 1870 and an 18th-century chapel. The Kostol Očisťovania Panny Márie church was built in 1819 in the Baroque Classicist style on the site of an earlier wooden church dating from 1694. It features a wall painting from 1912–1913 by Jozef Hanula, as well as a Classicist main altar dating from around 1820.

The cultural heritage also includes the distinctive “garatová ruža” embroidery, a form of sewn lace or openwork embroidery. The folk culture of Liptovské Revúce, shaped by shepherding, is known as Ovenálie and has remained almost unchanged to this day. Together with the varied hiking routes, it offers a second, cultural way to experience the destination: you can focus your plans more on the mountain landscape or on history, architecture and tradition.
