Likavka: Castle, Mill and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Likavka
Likavka combines historical sites with hiking trails of varying lengths. The main attractions are Likava Castle, an old water mill and a memorial in a wooded setting. For planning, it is also useful to know the difference between the approximately one-hour “Na Likavu” loop and the considerably longer route to Lúčky. Check the current access status before visiting the castle, and check local conditions before hiking.
Likava Castle and the Water Mill
Likava Castle was a royal guard castle dating from the first third of the 14th century; it was first mentioned in writing in 1341. In 1707, Prince František II Rákóczi ordered the castle to be demolished. It is one of the largest castle complexes in central Slovakia. An old castle road on the north side leads to the castle walls. From the lower courtyard, there are partial views of Likavka and Ružomberok.
The Hunyady Tower houses an exhibition on the castle’s history, with visual and material exhibits. After extensive reconstruction work, the tower opened to the public in 2004. On August 26, 2026, the castle was closed due to ongoing reconstruction work. Before visiting, check whether access is now possible; the view from the castle courtyard and the exhibition both require access to the castle.
The water mill in Likavka also has a long history: it was probably built in 1435 under Ján Hunyadi, at the same time as the bakery at Likava Castle. It was in operation from around 1640 to 1950. Today it is privately used; as the region’s only surviving mill, it has been listed in the central register of Slovak cultural heritage since 2016.
Memorial and Remembrance
The memorial in Likavka commemorates eleven insurgents and partisans who were murdered there on January 26, 1945. It stands in a wooded natural setting and is accessible via stone steps. The memorial’s purpose and location give a visit here a different focus from views of castle architecture or the history of the mill. Take the steps into account when planning your visit.
Comparing Hiking Trails
The “Na Likavu” loop from Likavka is 2.5 kilometres long, takes approximately one hour, is marked in red and has an elevation gain of 115 metres. Near Likavka, it connects to the red-marked hiking trail from Ružomberok to Likava Castle and continues to Sedlo Spuštiak saddle. Parking for the trailhead is available on the E77 road in Pod hradom Street; the “Likavka,,hrad” bus stop is about 200 metres from the route’s starting point. Check local information before setting out. The loop is not suitable for visitors with reduced mobility or for strollers; trail markers and conditions may also change.
The hiking route from Likavka to Lúčky requires more time and elevation gain. It passes Likava Castle, Predný Choč, Spuštiak, Stredná poľana and Veľký Choč. The route is considered relatively demanding, has an elevation gain of 1,114 metres and takes 6 hours and 45 minutes. Around the summit, it reaches a high-alpine landscape. By comparison, “Na Likavu” is the shorter of the two routes described, taking approximately one hour and gaining 115 metres. Before setting out on the longer route, check current trail conditions and markings locally.
Find a Hotel for Your Stay in Likavka
If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Likavka, you can base your choice on your planned itinerary: will the short “Na Likavu” loop be your main activity, or are you planning time for the longer hike to Lúčky? The history of the castle and mill, as well as the memorial, offer other ways to shape your stay. For each hotel, compare the information on location, amenities and booking conditions with your own plans. Choose your hotel based on whether you want to focus your stay on the short loop, the longer hike, or the castle, mill and memorial.
