Lisková: Nature, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Lisková
Lisková brings together archaeological evidence, protected natural features, church and local history, and marked trails. The following destinations offer concrete points of reference for planning your trip.
Nature and Landscape
Liskovská jaskyňa is a national natural monument; only the entrance is accessible to visitors. The first documented settlement of the Lengyel culture in Liptov was discovered in the cave. This site thus combines the protection of a natural monument with a specific archaeological finding.
The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary is located above the cave and offers views of the Low and Western Tatras. Another natural monument is Skalná päsť: the rock is six metres high and lies below Mount Mních. The Mohylky nature reserve contains fossils of marine shellfish, nummulites and corals that are about 50 million years old. While the view from the chapel takes in the named mountain ranges, Mohylky is notable for its fossil traces. These examples show two different aspects of the landscape: views and geological history.
Church, Remembrance and Local History
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord was consecrated in 1936. Its freestanding Baroque tower comes from an older church, which was demolished in 1934 because of its poor structural condition. The tower and the consecration therefore point to different building phases: the tower is from the earlier church, while 1936 is the consecration year of the church mentioned here.
The birthplace of Vavro Šrobár is in the centre of Lisková on Vavra Šrobára Street, beside the main road. A commemorative plaque on the house was installed in 1937 for his 70th birthday. The house’s location helps with finding your way around the village; the plaque commemorates a specific occasion. The Way of the Cross in Lisková is also described by clear features: it has 14 stations, starts at a small chapel and ends at a small church dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The number of stations and the different buildings at the endpoints give the Way of the Cross its own distinct layout.
Hiking, Cycling and Climbing
A yellow-marked hiking trail starts in Lisková and leads to the trail junction below Smrekov. From there, marked trails continue to the Sedlo Spuštiak saddle in the Choč National Nature Reserve and then towards Veľký Choč. Several named points are important for orientation: the trail junction, the saddle and the direction of Veľký Choč.
A red-marked cycling route also runs through Lisková. It leads west to Ružomberok and east to Liptovská Teplá. For hikers, the trail junction below Smrekov is the first named point of reference; for the cycling route, the two directions and their destinations are key. This allows you to choose your route according to your preferred activity and direction.
The Lisková climbing sector has about 23 routes of varying difficulty. Rock climbing has been officially permitted there since 1 December 2023. Check the applicable conditions before climbing.
Getting There and Choosing a Location
Lisková is on the Žilina–Košice railway line. This connection is another point of reference when choosing where to stay. For specific travel plans, check the relevant train connections and journey times for your travel dates. Together with the nature, culture and activity options, this can help you assess which aspects of the village are especially important for planning your trip.
