If you want to combine hiking, nature and village history on a trip, Stankovany offers a variety of themes to choose from. Šíp shapes the hiking plans, while Podšíp offers insights into traditional building methods and local history. There are also small museums, church architecture and natural attractions in the surrounding area.

Hiking at Šíp and experiencing nature

Šíp is the highest peak in the Šípska Fatra. Along the ascent, you can enjoy views of mountain meadows, preserved forest and rock formations along a ridge. The hike is considered moderately difficult. It is suitable for children, except for steep sections that are unsuitable for small children. The 302-hectare area of Šíp is designated a national nature reserve because of its rare plant and animal species.

The circular hike starting from Stankovany is listed as 11.1 kilometres long, with 775 metres of elevation gain and loss respectively, and a duration of 4.25 hours. These figures give you a concrete indication of how much time to allow for the hike. Routes and conditions may change; check the current route before setting out.

An annual ascent of Šíp takes place on the last Sunday in April. In Podšíp, it includes folk music, beer on tap or Kofola, and goulash. If you plan to attend, check the event details and schedule before your trip.

Podšíp: Wooden houses and trails

Podšíp was designated a monument zone in 1991. Six houses with outbuildings in traditional log construction have been preserved: the walls are made of round or hewn logs. This lets you see the building method in actual structures rather than learning about it only as an abstract architectural style.

From Stankovany, Podšíp can be reached by a blue-marked cycle route and a green-marked hiking trail. The green-marked hiking trail passes the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Podšíp is accessible only on foot or by bicycle; motorized visitors are not permitted. Markings and trail conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check them before setting out.

The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary was built in 1832 in gratitude for surviving a cholera epidemic in the community. Its origins link the building to a specific event in the community’s history. Those hiking to Podšíp can consider this historical connection alongside the traditional wooden construction.

Church and Stankovská izba

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a historicizing Neo-Gothic building dating from 1898 to 1901. Its described features include a cruciform floor plan, attached chapels and a 38-metre-high tower with a pyramidal roof. Inside are an altar, statues and Stations of the Cross from the Tyrolean carving workshop of Ferdinand Stuflesser. Twenty modern stained-glass windows by Ladislav Záborský add another distinctive feature to the interior.

Stankovská izba is a small local museum with old tools, furniture and household items. Visitors are welcome; arrange your visit in advance through the municipal office. This means that planning a museum visit differs from planning a hike, for which the route and trail conditions are the main considerations.

Springs and natural attractions in the surrounding area

The Mädokýš pod lesom spring lies about two kilometres west of Stankovany and can be reached on foot via a forest path. A small wooden shelter covers the spring; occasional hikers use it for drinking water. The Sírny prameň spring lies about one kilometre to the west, next to the railway line, and can also be reached via a forest path. Local trail conditions may change at both destinations.

Nearby, next to the railway line, lies the Močiar nature reserve. At the edge of the area is the Sírny medokýš spring, where visitors can draw mineral water. Another travertine formation in the surrounding area is designated a natural monument: its crater contains a mineral water spring, and there is a circular lake at its summit. It was designated in 1971. There is also a restored mineral bath nearby that is used for swimming on warm summer days. Before visiting, check whether it will be open on your travel dates.

Plan your journey

Stankovany is served by passenger trains on the main railway line. As timetables may change, check your connection before travelling. This lets you plan your journey separately from your choice of excursions: for Šíp, consider factors such as walking time and elevation gain; for Podšíp, the permitted ways of access; and for the springs, the forest paths leading to each one.
