Kalameny combines a thermal spring with an educational trail leading to the ruins of Liptovský Castle. This brings different themes together during a stay: public bathing in the pond, nature along the way and the history of a medieval castle. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in the thermal spring, the route through the landscape or the castle grounds.

Thermal Spring and Bathing in Kalameny

The thermal spring is located in the Kalamenská Valley in the Choč Mountains, about one kilometre north of Kalameny. It is an artificial borehole drilled in 1991–1992, and the water is approximately 33 °C. This gives you a clear idea of the spring’s origin and temperature, while the pond itself is used for public bathing.

The pond is used for public bathing year-round. Conditions may vary in practice. Bathing is therefore a distinct attraction in Kalameny, but it can also be combined with the educational trail: the trail starts in the town centre and first leads to the thermal spring and bathing pond. The rest of the route continues towards the castle.

The Educational Trail from Kalameny to the Castle

From the town centre, the Kalameny–Liptovský Castle educational trail leads to the thermal spring and then across meadows and through the forest to the ruins. The sequence reveals the different parts of the landscape along the way: the area around the spring is followed by open meadows and forest, before the route ends at Liptovský Castle. No walking time or route length is specified.

Along the way, the educational trail provides information about the history of Kalameny and Liptovský Castle, as well as local geology, the water cycle and the forest. This brings nature and history together on the same route, without focusing solely on the castle destination. If you are especially interested in history, the castle offers a specific point of interest; if you are interested in the landscape, you will encounter several different sections along the route.

Liptovský Castle: History and Views

Liptovský Castle was built in the Middle Ages on the 993-metre-high Sestrč. The castle was constructed in 1262 during the reign of King Béla IV and was demolished in 1474 on the orders of King Matthias Corvinus. The two dates mark different chapters in its history: the construction of the castle and its later demolition. The area is a national cultural monument; the exposed original foundations are open to the public and free to visit.

From Liptovský Castle, there are views of the Western Tatras, the Liptov Basin and the Low Tatras, as well as part of the Great Fatra and the distinctive Veľký Choč. The castle thus combines visible remains of its walls with views across several named landscapes. A visit offers two different focal points: the surviving foundations and the view from the castle.

Getting Your Bearings at the Start of the Route

The “Kalameny,,kult.dom” bus stop is right at the start of the educational trail. There is a paid car park by the church in the town centre. These details help you locate the start of the route without treating the thermal spring and the castle as separate destinations: the trail leads from this starting point first to the spring and then on to the ruins.

The Roman Catholic church in Kalameny also has interior murals. It adds another cultural point of interest in the town to the themes surrounding the castle. Overall, Kalameny can be explored through a range of attractions: bathing at the thermal spring, walking through meadows and forest, or discovering the history and views at Liptovský Castle. Which of these aspects appeals to you most may influence your choice of destination for your hotel stay.
