Between protected habitats, wooden churches and museums, Maramureş reveals itself from different perspectives. Munții Maramureșului Nature Park, the Mocănița, the UNESCO ensemble of wooden churches and the region’s museums each offer a different focus for planning your trip.

Nature, Railway and Routes

Munții Maramureșului Nature Park is a protected area. Its responsibilities include preserving the landscape and local traditions, as well as promoting tourism based on these values. Nature and cultural heritage are therefore not separate topics: both are explicitly stated goals of the park.

Distinctive terrestrial and aquatic habitats characterize Tăul Morărenilor. Reproductively isolated plant and animal species are found there. The area is also exceptional botanically: it is the only place in Romania where black alder, green alder and grey alder grow together. Nature enthusiasts will find both aquatic and terrestrial habitats here, as well as a clearly identifiable botanical feature.

The Mocănița narrow-gauge railway offers a different perspective on the landscape. It is 56 kilometers long in total: 43 kilometers run along the Vaser, with further sections following the tributaries Novăț and Ștevioara. This breakdown makes clear that the route does not follow the Vaser alone, but also includes its tributaries.

The Drumul Maramureșului offers more than 700 kilometers of nature and cultural experiences to explore on foot or by bicycle. One specific day section is a 24-kilometer stage between Poienile de sub Munte and Vișeu de Sus. This gives you a choice between an extensive route and a single section described as a day trip, offering different scales for planning. Published route details and stages may change; check the route if you are planning a specific trip. Another experience combines a day at Gospodăria – In Tierti with learning about traditional cuisine. Check in advance whether it is offered for your travel dates.

Wooden Churches, Cemetery and Village Architecture

The UNESCO ensemble of wooden churches in Maramureş comprises eight churches. They represent different architectural periods and regions. This diversity offers a useful perspective: the ensemble does not represent a single building period or a uniform regional style, but brings together several periods and areas.

The Merry Cemetery of Săpânța is now an open-air museum. More than 850 crosses stand in the churchyard; the first were made in 1935. The number gives an idea of the site’s scale, while the year marks a historical starting point. The cemetery can therefore be viewed both as an open-air museum today and as a place that has grown over time.

The Maramureşean Village Museum “Mihai Dăncuş” comprises more than 30 monuments of rural architecture. It was designed as a village typical of the region and illustrates the development of a settlement: over time, a dispersed settlement became a compact village. The buildings are therefore more than individual examples of rural architecture; the museum’s concept also reflects the transformation of the settlement. The museum is located on Dealul Dobăieş, about 500 meters from the DN18. This road leads to the Iza and Mara valleys.

The Ethnographic Museum of Maramureş has extensive collections on domestic life, traditional costumes and folk architecture, as well as carpets, textiles and folk masks. These are complemented by icons on glass, canvas and wood. The collection ranges from everyday objects and clothing to different forms of folk art.

Museums and Historical Perspectives

At the Sighet Memorial, the former prison has been transformed into a museum. The individual cells contain thematic or chronological displays on political repression in the 20th century. Depending on the approach chosen, the rooms organize the subject either by theme or in chronological order. The former prison remains the historic site that provides the setting for the museum.

The Maramureş Museum is housed in a historic monument built in the Baroque style in 1730. It features the exhibition “Sighetu-Marmației – 680” and a collection on the flora and fauna of Maramureş.

The “Dr. Ioan Mihalyi de Apşa” House Museum with Art Gallery is considered the first museum in Maramureş. Four rooms display original furniture, a library, and an extensive collection of paintings and documents. These rooms offer a different setting for a museum visit than the village museum with its ensemble of rural architecture: here, the focus is on furniture, books, artworks and documents.
