Firiza: Lake Firiza and nature activities
Accommodation in Firiza
When looking for a hotel in Firiza, it helps to plan your trip around the activities that matter to you: Lake Firiza, forest scenery, trails, or guided excursions. The options vary in duration and type of activity. Useful points of reference when choosing include the length of a boat trip, a minimum group size, and the difference between a guided tour and an activity you do on your own.
Lake Firiza and the surrounding forests
Beech and spruce trees, along with hornbeam, sessile oak, birch, and alder, grow at Lake Firiza and in the surrounding forests. The area is considered a habitat for protected species such as the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) and the lynx (Lynx lynx). The forest and lake therefore provide a tangible connection to nature during your stay, but sightings of these animals are not guaranteed. Traditional houses in Firiza are also a cultural point of interest: a 2014 excursion description lists them as destinations in the Igniș Mountains.
Boat trips and activities on the water
The electric boat trip on Lake Firiza lasts 45 to 60 minutes and requires at least four people. It is described as suitable for all family members. Among other things, the audio guide covers the history of the church tower submerged in Lake Firiza. The duration and group size can help you fit this activity into your plans; the church tower is a topic covered by the audio guide.
If you would rather explore the lake on your own, you can rent one- or two-person kayaks, stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), and rowing boats for two to four people from Simared. This selection differs from the electric boat trip: rather than a ride with a specified duration, you can choose from various watercraft and their respective capacities.
Courses and E-bike tours
Jungle Park has outdoor challenge courses and zip lines between the trees. At Simared, children can ride electric CF-Moto ATVs on specially designed courses. The North Quest accompanies them throughout the experience and provides guidance on safe and proper use. These activities clearly differ in format: Jungle Park focuses on courses and zip lines, while the ATV activity involves riding on purpose-built tracks with continuous supervision.
Guided E-bike tours with The North Quest range from leisurely rides with scenic views to technical trails and flowing routes. Simared also offers City E-bikes and E-MTBs for rent. According to the provider, they are suitable for off-road excursions as well as longer, leisurely rides through Baia Mare and the surrounding area. When choosing between a guided tour and a rental bike, both your preferred riding style and the stated intended use are relevant.
Trails: documented section and planned circuit
The first stage of the Poteca Lacului Firiza is two kilometers long, connects Complex Turistic Simared with Valea Romană, and is described as suitable for walking and trail running. Check current conditions before setting out. The planned full route, the Poteca Lacului Firiza, is intended to circle the lake on a marked trail of approximately ten kilometers, for use on foot, by bicycle, or running. The first section and the planned circuit therefore have different stated lengths and statuses.
Another route is called “Baraj Firiza–Vidra–coada lacului.” A 2015 route description lists a blue triangle and a red dot as the trail markings; an additional blue C marking is specified for cyclists. Since these marking details come from an older description, local confirmation before setting out is recommended.
