Accommodation in Ruscova
Ruscova lies in Munții Maramureșului Nature Park and is one of the Ukrainian-influenced communities along the Ruscova Valley. Its varied, mountainous-looking terrain is characterized mainly by hills between 600 and 900 m. The area offers a range of options for planning your trip: a traditional manor house, Ukrainian cultural heritage, described hiking routes, and a seasonal water activity.
Manor House and Scenery Around Ruscova
Conacul Drahneilor is a traditional Maramureș manor house in Ruscova, on Valea Dragmirov. It was built from carved fir wood on a stone foundation and has a shingle roof, typical of traditional buildings in Maramureș. The building thus highlights both the materials used and a regional architectural style.
From Ruscova, a paved road about 4 km long crosses the Ruscova River and passes through Valea Dragmirov to the manor house. The route therefore connects the village with the valley and the destination at the end of the road. Road conditions can change; check the current situation before driving and the access arrangements before visiting.
Hiking Routes Through Varied Landscapes
One route crosses the Ruscova Valley and then follows the path through Valea Paulic for about 500 m. It passes through the clusters of houses in Smereca, through a mixed beech and spruce forest, and by Piatra Socolău. It continues across two clearings to the Stânișoara mountain pasture. The marked trail then runs below the Mihailecu ridge and along the ridge, with its karst features, to the 1,917 m-high Vf. Mihailecu. The route then descends to Lacul Vinderel. The sequence thus leads from inhabited areas and forest to the ridge and lake.
The Paltin–Lespedea–Lupului–Obcina–Drahmirov route takes a different course. From Valea Lespedea, it follows DJ 187 for about 10 km, running parallel to the Ruscova River. It then turns into Valea Lupului and follows a cart track to the Obcina ridge. Via Valea Drahmirov, the trail descends again to DJ 187, also along a cart track. The descriptions emphasize different features: one route leads to Vf. Mihailecu and onward to Lacul Vinderel, while the other initially follows the river and then links valleys and a ridge. No walking time is given here for either route. Check conditions on trails and roads before setting out.
Water, Nature, and Ukrainian Cultural Heritage
The Ruscova and Dragmirov valleys have rapids and cascades. At the confluence of the Ruscova and Vișeu rivers, water sports using inflatable boats are practiced in summer, when the water is warm. This seasonal condition is important when planning: check local water conditions and the availability of operators in advance.
Cultural sites also give Ruscova its distinctive character. The Ukrainian monastery “Nașterea Sf. Ioan Botezătorul” is located in Ruscova-Oblaz, in Maramureș County. Oblaz is also home to the wooden church “Sfântul Ierarh Nicolae.” It was built in 1954 at its present location using wood from the former parish church in Ruscova. The history of the wood and the church’s present location are two distinct aspects of the church.
In Munții Maramureșului Nature Park, the Eurasian otter is permanently present in the Vișeu catchment area and also along the Ruscova River. Its presence does not guarantee a sighting. When out in nature, follow the nature park’s rules and keep your distance from the animals.
