When looking for a hotel in Mittelstadt, mining history, landscapes, and craftsmanship may play a role in choosing your destination. The highlights range from the summit panorama at Dealul Minei to a lake that changes color with the seasons and a long-standing pottery tradition. Depending on whether you are most interested in nature, mining, or local culture, different places offer different points of focus.

Mining history along trails and by the lake

The Traseul Minier Principal leads to the 730 m summit of Dealul Minei. From there, you can enjoy a panorama of the surrounding area. The destination combines a specific high point with wide-ranging views of the landscape. Those interested in mining history can also follow a different route: Puțul Francisc și Borcut leads to the ruins of Puțul Francisc.

The two routes therefore have different named destinations: the Traseul Minier Principal leads to the summit, while Puțul Francisc și Borcut leads to the ruins. The ruins have not been stabilized. The formation of Lacul Albastru is also part of the area’s mining history. The lake formed between 1919 and 1920 when water accumulated following the collapse of a mine or surface workings.

Lakes and elevations

Lacul Albastru is a national protected area within the administrative boundaries of the city of Baia Sprie. It lies at an elevation of 530 m on the southern slope of Dealul Minei. Its color changes over the course of the year: in spring, especially in April and May, the water appears blue and turquoise; in summer, emerald green; and in autumn, greenish-brown. This seasonal sequence makes the timing of your trip part of the landscape experience; the color changes are attributed to iron sulfate.

Lacul Bodi is marked by a different elevation: it lies at 731 m at the foot of Vârful Mogoșa, also called Muntele Negru. The elevations of 730 m and 731 m are close, but refer to different points: the first is the summit of Dealul Minei, while the second is the location of Lacul Bodi. Their respective reference points make it possible to distinguish between the two places.

Vârful Igniș reaches 1,307 m. It lies on a volcanic plateau with striking rock formations and bilberry and lingonberry bushes. The summit elevation, plateau, and vegetation give this landscape a different character from the lakes at Dealul Minei. If you are interested in the area’s natural features, both bodies of water and mountain ranges offer distinct points of interest.

Church, pottery, and Vâltori

Two miners’ banners from 1886 and 1889 are on display in the Biserica romano-catolică Sf. Maria. There is also the banner of the potters’ guild, dating from 1852. Together, these objects bring the history of mining and craftsmanship into a shared exhibition setting and give both subjects a tangible historical connection.

Pottery has a long-standing tradition in Baia Sprie; Daniel Leș is considered the city’s last potter. This is a distinct cultural point of interest alongside the historical banners. Chiuzbaia also has four working Vâltori. They are used for washing and are also local tourist attractions. Their practical use and role as attractions exist side by side: they are both functional facilities and part of the local experience.

When planning your trip, you can weigh these interests against one another: the summit and mining connections shape the experience of Dealul Minei, while the seasonal colors give Lacul Albastru a distinctive natural appeal. The church, pottery tradition, and Vâltori offer a way to explore history and craftsmanship. Mittelstadt thus offers a range of themes, without suggesting that the mountain landscape, lakes, and cultural landmarks provide the same experience.
