Traditional pottery, folk masks and a karst spring are among the different features of Săcel. A mill complex and a route with panoramic views are also notable points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Săcel, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Karst Spring and Nature Reserve

The “Peștera și Izbucul Izvorul Albastru al Izei” nature reserve is located in Săcel and covers 100 hectares. The Izvorul Albastru al Izei, also known as Izbucul Izei, is where water that disappears underground in Peștera Izei resurfaces. The spring and cave are therefore part of a connected karst system: water disappears underground and emerges again elsewhere. This connection is central to understanding the landscape; it describes a natural phenomenon, not a tourist facility. The reserve’s name brings together both features, while the stated area indicates its size.

Pottery and a Traditional Farmstead

Pottery is the oldest craft in Săcel preserved through tradition. The pottery center works with red clay extracted from deep underground, using traditional techniques. One distinctive step takes place after the pottery has dried: the vessels are polished across their entire surface with a flint stone. This specifies both when the work is done and the full extent of the surface treated.

The pottery workshop, a traditional farmstead, dates from the late 19th century, more precisely from 1890 to 1900. The complex includes a dwelling, a barn, a shelter for the kiln and a well. Except for the well, the buildings are made of round fir logs laid horizontally. This distinguishes the individual parts of the farmstead and the construction method described: the dates refer to the farmstead, while the details about the logs refer to its buildings.

Folk Masks and Local Materials

The workshop of folk mask maker Master Vasile Șușca is located in Săcel. Around 2000, he revived the traditional craft of mask-making. The masks are made for winter customs. Materials include goat, sheep or lamb hide, wool and fur; all the raw materials come from the village of Săcel. Vasile Șușca received the “Living Human Treasure” title in 2022. These details show two aspects of local mask-making: the materials used and the story of its revival.

Mill Technology and a Route

The Dănilă Mecleș complex includes a watermill, a water-powered fulling mill and a wool carding machine. All the mechanisms are driven by the power of the Iza. The complex is located on the road in Săcel, near the lower church. The watermill, fulling mill and wool carding machine are distinct parts of the same complex; they are linked technically by their shared power source.

The Săcel–Valea Baicu–Săcel route begins in Săcel and initially follows the DNJ17C road to Pasul Șetref. Along the route, there are panoramic views of the Rodna Ridge and the “Pyramids” of Țibleș, including Arcer, Țibleș and Bran. Two different considerations are relevant to planning: the route described and the viewpoints named. The route is not associated here with any particular mode of transport.
