Seini lies on the eastern edge of the Someș Plain, where it meets the western foothills of the Gutâi Mountains. For a stay, cultural history and specific cycling and route options are particularly relevant, alongside this geographical setting. You can decide in advance whether to focus on churches and monuments or plan a longer route.

Landscape and Historic Sites

On Dealul Comja is a living monument made up of approximately 10,000 fir trees, arranged to form the name “Eminescu.” The formation was created in 1939; its development has also involved replanting and rehabilitation. Seini’s medieval fortress offers another historical focus. It is located on Dealul Cetății, to the northeast of the town, and is registered as archaeological heritage. The tree formation and the fortress thus represent different aspects of the town: a distinctive feature of the landscape and a medieval heritage site.

Churches and Architectural History

The Roman Catholic church is considered the oldest church in the town and dates from 1421. The Reformed, also known as Calvinist, church was built in 1796. The Church of Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril was built between 1879 and 1882 under the parish priest Alexiu Berinde; in the early 1940s, his son modernized the building. The Church of Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril contains the only stone iconostasis in a Romanian church. The dates of these churches point to clearly distinct building periods.

Other buildings add to the picture. The wooden church in Seini was built by craftspeople from the historic region of Maramureș. Casa Bay was built towards the end of the 19th century and is a historic monument. The obelisk stands in front of the Reformed church and commemorates Erdusy Syilvester Janos. Seini’s religious architectural history, architecture and memorials can therefore be explored as distinct themes. If you plan to visit the interior of a building, check access in advance.

Town Festival and When to Visit

Zilele oraşului Seini is a long-standing, two-day town festival featuring various cultural events. The program includes the celebration of the “Nunților de Aur,” folk performances, sports competitions and open-air concerts. This brings local tradition together with several kinds of events, without limiting your stay to a single theme. Check the specific festival dates before your trip so you can plan for the right time.

Rail, Cycling Routes and Longer Journeys

CFR Main Line 400 passes through Seini on the Brașov–Deda–Dej–Baia Mare–Satu Mare route. If you would like to include the train in your journey, check the passenger timetable before you travel. A municipal plan from 2025 mentions around six kilometres of cycling routes within the town and a bike-sharing system with four fixed rental stations. If you are planning around these services, check whether bike sharing is operating.

The Drumul Maramureșului is also relevant for a multi-day tour: the Seini–Țara Codrului route is listed as 170 kilometres and nine days long. This is a different time commitment from the cycling routes within the town; if you take on this tour, check the stage conditions before departure. This way, you can choose your accommodation to suit your actual travel plans—from a focus on historic buildings to planning a longer route.
