Satulung Commune lies in the Baia Mare Depression; the Someș River flows through the commune. Its travel highlights include an oak forest nature reserve, two Teleki Castles, churches with distinct historical associations, and local fruit-growing and distilling traditions. Lake Oanei adds a waterside setting to these themes.

Oak Forest, Valley, and Lake

A notable natural site is located in Fersig: the “Padurea Bavna” oak forest nature reserve lies within Satulung Commune and covers 26 hectares. It is classified as an IUCN Category IV protected area. For travelers wishing to include protected woodland in their plans, Padurea Bavna offers a specific natural point of interest.

Lake Oanei lies in the Oana Valley and covers one hectare. This brings together different natural features: the oak forest and its protected status in Fersig, and a body of water in the valley at Lake Oanei. There are fishing platforms there. As conditions may change, check what activities are currently permitted before visiting. The area figures offer a direct comparison: the reserve covers 26 hectares, while the water surface at Lake Oanei covers one hectare—a ratio of 26 to 1.

Teleki Castles and Churches

The two Teleki Castles have different historical associations. The Teleki Castle ensemble in Satulung is listed as a historic monument and reached its present size in 1891. It was known for its library of 4,000 volumes. Teleki Castle in Pribilești is a historic monument with the code MM-II-m-A-04609. It was built in the 1870s and 1880s as a summer residence and took its final form around 1897 in the Neo-Renaissance style. This distinguishes the information about Satulung—its size and library—from Pribilești’s construction period, purpose, and later architectural style.

The churches also offer specific historical reference points. Satulung’s Orthodox church was completed in stone in 1899; its oldest bell dates from 1637. Satulung’s Reformed church can accommodate 50 to 60 worshippers. The construction year, bell date, and capacity highlight different aspects of the local churches.

Local Traditions and Getting There

Plums and apples are grown more extensively in Fersig. Local traditions include small, simply equipped distilleries where stills are used to make țuică. Fruit growing and distilling are another aspect of local culture alongside the historic buildings. The Transilvania (Crama Veche) restaurant is also located in Satulung Commune.

Fersig railway station makes Satulung Commune easier to reach and is on Main Line 400. For specific travel arrangements, it is worth checking the current timetable.
