Remeți Commune combines Ukrainian cultural heritage with forested mountains and mountain hikes. Churches and cultural history offer a different focus from longer hikes on Muntele Bradului.

Churches and Ukrainian Culture

The old Ukrainian church in Remeți is a former Pauline monastery church dating from the 15th century. It preserves an 18th-century Rococo iconostasis. The church is about 200 metres from the national road, on Dubrora Hill northeast of the village. The new Ukrainian Orthodox parish church has a different building history: it is dedicated to All Saints and was built between 1984 and 1986. A team of painters from Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region decorated it with tempera paintings in 2001–2002. The two churches thus represent different periods: the former Pauline church with its Rococo iconostasis on the one hand, and a building from the 1980s with later interior paintings on the other.

For the Ukrainian community, the Ukrainian church in Remeți brings together prayer in their mother tongue with inherited traditions and customs. Music and community cultural events are also part of this picture. The “Remețeanca” cultural and artistic ensemble, whose members are pupils at the general school, has been recognised at Ukrainian cultural events. The Remeți choir’s repertoire includes Ukrainian folk songs. A local cultural report from 2024 describes the Ukrainian autumn customs and harvest festival “Obiceiuri de toamnă la ucraineni” (“Harvest Day”) as a long-standing tradition that brings together artistic groups from Ukrainian communities across Maramureș.

Forest-Covered Mountains and the Tisa

The landscape ranges from beech forests in the mountains of Remeți to sessile oaks, hornbeams and wild cherries on the lower hills. Remeți is part of the Natura 2000 sites ROSCI0251 Tisa Superioară and ROSCI0358 Pricop-Huta-Certeze. The Remeți watercourse runs through the settlement and flows into the Tisa River. On the mountain ascent from Remeți, Debra is described as a volcanic neck.

A regional travel report from 2021 describes views of the Tisa corridor and the village of Remeți during a mountain hike. This offers another perspective on the landscape, alongside its forests and watercourse. Young leaves of Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica Houtt., also Fallopia japonica) are also used in Remeți; locally, they are known as “bambus” or “bambusyna”.

Mountain Hikes and Practical Information

A 2014 route description gives the tourist circular route on Muntele Bradului a length of 18–19 kilometres, a duration of about seven and a half hours, and an elevation of approximately 1,079 metres. The duration depends on conditions and your own pace. The length, approximate time and elevation provide different planning reference points: the distance covered, the time required and the elevation reached. The circular route can be accessed from Pasul Huta or from Remeți. Check local road and trail conditions before setting off.

A mountain hike described in a 2021 travel report is a different route: from Remeți through the Bansca Valley, over the Măgura Pass and onwards to Piatra cu Iezer. This hike is not an officially designated tourist route. If you are comparing hiking options, distinguishing between the tourist circular route on Muntele Bradului and the described, unofficial route will help you interpret each route description correctly.

A 2014 tour information source mentions bus or minibus connections on the Baia Mare–Negrești Oaș–Sighetu Marmației route, as well as travelling by car. If you are planning to use public transport, check the current timetable before travelling.
