Harghita between a gorge, a volcanic lake and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Harghita
Harghita offers reasons to travel, from striking landscapes to a vibrant cultural heritage. A four-kilometre-long limestone gorge, a volcanic lake, an alpine peat bog and museums offering different perspectives on the region each add their own character. Religious traditions and a fortified church with centuries-old wall paintings are also among the experiences that can shape your trip.
Gorges, a volcanic lake and peatland
Cheile Vârghișului is a four-kilometre-long gorge in the Perșani Mountains, formed in Jurassic limestone. Together with the caves in the gorge, it forms an 800-hectare national nature reserve in IUCN Category IV. It overlaps with the Natura 2000 protected area RO SPA 0027 Dealurile Homoroadelor. Its geology and protected status give the landscape a distinctive character, without reducing the gorge to any single feature.
Another natural highlight is Lacul Sfânta Ana: the lake lies in the crater of Ciomatul Mare and is a volcanic lake in Central and Eastern Europe. Electric pontoon rides are available on the lake; each ride lasts 30 minutes and can accommodate up to twelve people. As availability may vary by season, it is advisable to check before your trip.
Tinovul Mohoș is an alpine peat bog where 13 pools remain. Rare carnivorous plants dating from the Quaternary period are also part of its natural landscape. Those interested in landscapes will find a different perspective here than at the crater lake: one centres on a lake within a volcanic crater, while the other features a peat bog, its remaining pools and its unusual plants.
Culture, tradition and regional history
Mikó Castle has been home to the Muzeul Secuiesc al Ciucului since 1970. The museum includes an open-air exhibition of wooden farmhouses and Szekler gates. The Toplița Ethnographic Museum has a different focus: it portrays the life of an ordinary person from the Toplița area through different stages of life and displays traditional garments, some of which are more than 100 years old.
A pilgrimage takes place every year at Pentecost in Șumuleu Ciuc. It is considered a tradition that has continued for several centuries. Its annual recurrence and long-standing continuity give this event a different timeframe from a museum visit: the focus here is a religious tradition, not a collection or exhibition.
The fortified church in Dârjiu is another destination for those interested in cultural history. Its wall paintings date from the 15th century. At Mini Transylvania Park, more than 120 miniature models of representative buildings from Transylvania are also on display. Rides on a Mini-Mocăniță are available as well; this activity may vary by season, so it is worth checking before you set out.
Routes and planning your trip
You can reach Cheile Vârghișului via the DN13A followed by the DJ132, or via the DN12 followed by the DJ131. Check road conditions before setting out. Separately, the DN12C runs through Cheile Bicazului–Hășmaș National Park, connecting Gheorgheni with Bicaz. The national park spans Harghita and Neamț counties.
A via ferrata tour requires good physical fitness and suitable equipment; inexperienced participants also need a guide. If you would like to spend more time exploring landscapes, museums or religious traditions, you can choose activities according to the experiences that matter to you. This way, planning starts with the experiences that interest you, rather than with a general idea of what a stay should look like.
