If you are looking for a hotel in Izvoare, the reason for your trip may be the deciding factor: the connection to Harghita-Mădăraș, the river and mountain landscape, or themes related to water power and horse riding. These interests lead to different planning questions. For the CR Trail, length, elevation gain and time required matter; the wildlife park is all about its size and landscape, while the water-powered sawmill and stud farm offer a different perspective on the area.

Trails between Izvoare and Harghita-Mădăraș

You can reach Harghita-Mădăraș via Izvoare on a paved road. The CR Trail connects the village of Izvoare with Harghita-Mădăraș, passing through the Fagul-Înalt Valley and then the Șopotul Valley. It is about 10 kilometres long, covers an elevation gain of more than 800 metres and takes approximately 4.5 hours. Length, elevation gain and approximate duration complement one another: the 10 kilometres alone convey neither the ascent nor the time required. The road connection describes access via Izvoare; the CR Trail adds a route profile that takes several hours. This lets you consider road access and trail planning as separate decisions. In winter, conditions may affect whether the CR Trail can be used. If you are planning a winter trip, check whether the route is suitable for your plans.

Rivers, mountains and an unusual canal effect

The Ivo (Izvoare) wildlife park covers 320 hectares. Rivers run through the grounds, and mountains surround the park. The area, waterways and mountain scenery shape the landscape here; the CR Trail, by contrast, is defined by its route and elevation gain. Another nature feature is Pârâul stătător Izvoare, an artificial canal built in the mid-20th century. Because the difference in elevation is very slight, people descending into the Izvoare Valley may get the impression that the canal is flowing uphill. The perspective while descending explains why the canal seems unusual.

Water power and sawmills in Zetea Commune

For historical context, it is worth looking at Zetea Commune. In earlier centuries, numerous water-powered sawmills operated there. The forested area and fast-flowing mountain rivers with high volumes of water and steep gradients favoured this. The water-powered sawmill in Izvoare is currently the only functioning water-powered sawmill in the central part of Romania. The two time and geographic references are distinct: the many sawmills of the past relate to the history of Zetea Commune, while the present-day description refers to a specific sawmill and the central part of Romania.

Horse riding and Icelandic horses

Ivo Riding Ranch was founded in 2008 as a small family business in the valley of the village of Izvoare, in Zetea Commune, Harghita County. Ivo Riding Ranch is home to practically the only stud farm for Icelandic horses in Romania. The riding activities are suitable for beginners and advanced riders. This means the riding theme can be understood both in terms of the stud farm’s distinctive feature and the experience levels mentioned: one describes the Icelandic horses, the other the intended audiences for the riding activities.
