Frumoasa brings together historic buildings and stories, farming traditions and the landscapes of the Ciuc Mountains. This gives you several themes to explore as you plan your trip: the history of the Armenian quarter, the Via Mariae pilgrimage route, the mountain hay meadows and the local cabbage-growing tradition.

Historic buildings and local history

Frumoasa’s wooden bell tower is one of the historic monuments of Harghita County. One of its distinctive features is the bell chamber, with a fir-wood structure, a plank balustrade and an upper section of latticework. The open tower rises from a conical shingle roof. These details give the building a distinctive architectural character.

Armenian heritage is also part of the village’s character. In the centre of the Armenian quarter, “ÖrmĂ©ny sziget,” stand town houses built by Armenians in the 19th century. Frumoasa’s Roman Catholic Szent-LĂĄszlĂł Church was dedicated to Saint Ladislaus in 1897. The medieval chapel in Frumoasa, on Muntele Fumos, is a ruin. A new bell tower, an earthen mound dedicated to Saint Ladislaus and a statue of the knight king were added to the site of the old chapel. Soil from various places in Transylvania and Slovakia was used for the mound.

Legend and printing history

A local legend links the name Frumoasa to Saint Ladislaus. He is said to have asked his horse to drink from the beautiful waters of the area. The story connects the place name with a tale about Ladislaus and the landscape. Alongside tangible evidence of local history is the “Frumoasa” printing house, which operated from 1929 to 1944 and produced various printed materials.

Pilgrimage route and landscape

The Via Mariae pilgrimage route passes through the municipality of Frumoasa. The designated section leads to the Szentlélek Chapel on Széphavas, which stands at an altitude of 1,339 metres.

The mountain hay meadows around Frumoasa offer views of sunrise and sunset and feature the characteristic plant life of the Ciuc Mountains. Visitors can follow various hiking trails at the Frumoasa Dam. The dam is on the Frumoasa River, a tributary of the Olt. The area thus offers a choice between trails around the dam and open meadow landscapes.

Cabbage-growing tradition and local cuisine

Cabbage growing in Frumoasa has a centuries-old tradition. The seedlings are planted during the week of Saint Ladislaus, and the harvest takes place in mid-October. Planting and harvesting are therefore part of a local tradition with clearly defined times of year.

At the cabbage harvest festival, visitors can sample cabbage-based dishes prepared by cooking teams on site. KultĂșrbisztrĂł in the centre of Frumoasa serves Armenian coffee. If this offering matters to your plans, check before visiting. The cabbage harvest festival and the coffee offer two different glimpses of local food culture: dishes prepared at the festival and Armenian coffee in the village centre.
