Lazarea brings together several clearly distinct cultural themes: a medieval chapel on Mount Szármány, Lázár Castle as an example of Transylvanian Renaissance architecture, the history of the Franciscan monastery, and an artistic tradition that continues to the present day. There is also an annual Cabbage Festival. This makes it possible to understand the destination through its historical architecture and cultural history, as well as through contemporary art and a seasonal event.

Chapel, Mountain and Castle

The Roman Catholic “Sfântul Anton” Chapel dates from the 15th century and is located on Mount Szármány, north of Lazarea. There were once five chapels arranged in a cross on the mountainside. It is helpful to make a distinction: the chapel is a specific medieval building, while the five chapels describe a historical arrangement on the mountainside. This places a single sacred site alongside the wider history of the cultural landscape.

Lázár Castle is an example of Renaissance architecture in Transylvania and is located near the village center. It offers a different architectural point of reference from the chapel on the mountain: here, the focus is on a castle, while there it is a 15th-century Roman Catholic religious building. Those interested in Lazarea’s history can therefore distinguish these places by their architectural form as well as by their religious and art-historical context.

Monastery History and Contemporary Art

The Franciscan monastery brings together a specific work of art and a cultural history that can be dated. A statue of Kájoni János stands in its courtyard. His printing press operated at the monastery from 1675 to 1854. The statue points to a work of art in the courtyard, while the printing press opens up a historical context of work and culture with a clearly defined time span. The history of printing thus complements the monastery’s religious and architectural context.

Lazarea’s artistic tradition also includes contemporary art. The founders conceived the art camp as an open window onto contemporary Romanian art; the concept was intended to accept and appreciate all artistic currents. The Lazarea art collection comprises 2,117 works. In addition, the Cultural and Art Center organizes a variety of contemporary cultural and artistic events; the specific program may vary. The collection, art camp and event program each emphasize something different: the body of works, a deliberately open artistic vision and a changing cultural program. Alongside the historic architecture and the monastery’s history, contemporary art therefore offers another distinct way to experience Lazarea.

Cabbage Festival and When to Visit

The Cabbage Festival and Cabbage Market take place every year on the second weekend of October; the exact dates change from year to year. The festival includes a market for traditional products, although individual vendors may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates for the relevant year before making arrangements. Unlike the chapel, castle and monastery history, the festival is tied to a specific weekend. This timing difference can help you coordinate your visit with your cultural interests or the seasonal market event.
