Lupeni, also known as Farkaslaka, lies in the Fehér-Nyikó Valley and along Romanian National Road 13A. These two geographical reference points can help you find your way; check road conditions before setting out. The area is known for its medieval buildings, places commemorating the writer Tamási Áron, pilgrimage routes, and a variety of activities. The themes are easy to distinguish: from archaeological traces and neoclassical architecture to horseback riding tours and locally inspired cuisine.

Medieval Traces and Architecture

Cetatea Firtoş near Firtuşu is a medieval fortress dating from the 13th century. It lies north of the village, near the border with Corund Commune. Mănăstirea fortificată de la Firtuşu, a fortified monastery and place of worship from the same period, stands on Dealul Firtoş. Ruins near Firtuşu also recall a Roman watch and signal tower. These three sites represent distinct historical categories: a fortress, a fortified monastery, and a Roman watch and signal tower.

A different chapter in the area’s architecture is represented by the Roman Catholic church in Lupeni. Built between 1842 and 1848 in the neoclassical style, it stands on the church hill west of the village. At 47 meters long and 15.80 meters wide, the building is considerably longer than it is wide; the tower is 38 meters high. These measurements give a concrete sense of its proportions, while its construction dates and style place the church in its historical and architectural context.

Places Commemorating Tamási Áron

The Tamási Áron Memorial House is the writer’s birthplace, which is over 150 years old. Built from hewn timber, the building has a shingle roof. The exhibition features furniture and personal belongings, as well as manuscripts, works, letters, and photographs. This offers a glimpse into different aspects of the writer: his home environment, his written legacy, and personal memories of him.

The Tamási Áron Monument also references his work. The three-meter-high, eight-ton work was carved from a boulder by sculptors Jenő and Tibor Szervátiusz. It depicts characters from “Énekes madár,” “Ördögváltozás Csíkban,” and the Ábel trilogy. The writer’s grave is a separate site: it lies on the western edge of Lupeni, beyond the Roman Catholic church and cemetery, in a flower-filled park. The Memorial House, monument, and grave each offer a different way to remember Tamási Áron.

Pilgrimage Routes and Horseback Riding

Themed route Via Transilvanica passes through the Harghita County communes of Praid, Atia, Atid, Inlăceni, and Lupeni. Via Mariae is a spiritual pilgrimage route that is also used for tourism and sports. The described section runs from Inlăceni via Firtuşu, Păuleni, and Lupeni to Dealu. The routes differ mainly in their focus and the stages named: the pilgrimage aspect is explicitly part of the Via Mariae concept, while Via Transilvanica is described as a themed route.

The Lófő Equestrian Center in Lupeni offers horseback riding tours, sleigh rides, and carriage rides. Horseback riding tours must be booked in advance; three to four days’ notice is recommended. Depending on customers’ needs, tours can last anywhere from one hour to one week. If you plan to take part, consider both the possible duration and the advance booking requirement, and ask about booking details before your trip.

More Experiences and Local Cuisine

The Inima Lui Iisus Statue is about 22 meters high and made of iron and stainless steel. Visitors can climb an internal metal spiral staircase up to the head and enjoy the view from above. This is a different kind of experience from the trails and historic buildings: here, climbing inside the statue and taking in the view from above are integral parts of the visit.

At Imperiul Poneilor, children can ride and pet ponies. The site also includes an exhibition of pony-drawn carriages and small animals such as rabbits, chickens, lambs, peacocks, pigeons, and pheasants. Kotyogó Restaurant in Lupeni focuses on local traditions and serves Transylvanian classics. Alongside history and routes, visitors can therefore choose animal encounters and locally inspired food as distinct experiences.
