Constanta: Discover Ancient Sites and Nature

Histria and Ancient History

The Histria Museum Complex includes the Fortress Museum and the ruins of the Greco-Roman city. Its history spans from the 7th century BC to the 7th century AD. The museum displays Greek, Roman and Byzantine archaeological finds from Histria and its surroundings. The ruins include the Romano-Byzantine defensive wall, ancient streets and squares, basilica foundations, Roman baths and ancient temples. The museum and archaeological site therefore offer two distinct perspectives: the finds reveal objects from the city and its surroundings, while the ruins showcase its architectural structures.

The archaeological site can be reached via the DN 2A to Ovidiu, the DN 22 to Tariverde and the DJ 22A to the fortress. Check road conditions before setting out. This helps you plan your visit more purposefully without treating the different stops as a single tour.

Monuments and Museums

Near Adamclisi stands the Tropaeum Traiani triumphal monument, erected in 109 under Emperor Trajan. Its 54 metopes, made of Deleni limestone, depict battle scenes in relief; 48 of the original 54 have survived. These numbers distinguish the monument’s original design from what remains today. In Capidava, visitors can see the defensive wall, Roman street plan, administrative buildings, an early Christian basilica, harbor facilities and a bathhouse. Under Trajan, Capidava was part of the Roman defense system along the Danube Limes.

The National Museum of History and Archaeology in Constanța presents a broad sweep of history: its archaeological collections include prehistoric, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and medieval finds. The objects on display also include the Tomis sculpture treasure, discovered in 1962. Together with Histria and the monuments, the museum offers a distinct focus for travelers interested in exploring different periods and artifacts.

Protected Areas and Landscapes

The natural areas also offer different points of interest. The Agigea Coastal Dunes Nature Reserve covers approximately 25 hectares and lies about 50 meters from the Black Sea coast. Fântânița-Murfatlar is a national IUCN Category IV protected area for flora and fauna, covering 19.70 hectares. Species found there include Dobruja flax, the steppe peony, the Murfatlar thorn and the Dobruja tortoise.

The Corbu-Nuntași-Histria ornithological reserve is a mixed scientific nature reserve within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and covers more than 1,610 hectares. Its shallow, nutrient-rich waters provide favorable conditions for observing many bird species. Grindul Chituc is a nationally protected coastal sandbank that separates Lake Sinoe, or the Razim-Sinoe lagoon system, from the Black Sea. A total of 315 bird species have been recorded in the area, which is also an important stopover for migratory birds. The Locul fosilifer Cernavodă fossil site offers a different natural attraction: this three-hectare national IUCN Category III protected area contains fossils from the Lower Cretaceous, including corals, snails, bivalves and brachiopods.
