Costinești: Beaches, the Faleza and maritime history
Accommodation in Costinești
Costinești combines the Black Sea coast with a centrally located lake and distinctive historical and cultural sites. The commune is designated a tourist resort of national interest. If you’re looking for a hotel in Costinești, understanding the differences between the Faleza, the beach areas and the sights can help you choose the right focus for your trip.
Coast and beach areas
The Costinești Faleza stretches for approximately 1.5 kilometres. It offers opportunities for water sports, cycling and seaside walks.
Plaja Pescăruș is in the southern part of the resort. A description from 2024 called it a wild beach; this characterization may change with the season. If the beach’s character is important to your choice, check the conditions locally.
An editorial report from 2016 located the beach in Golful Francezului, south of the resort and beyond Hotel Forum, and described it as wild and narrow; it also noted that the seabed slopes steeply at the water’s edge. Check the conditions before your visit if you plan to go to this beach.
A local description from 2024 located Plaja Tineretului between the Marea Neagră restaurant and the Mega Discoteca club. Since such commercial landmarks may change, check locally if you need to confirm that the names are still current.
Lake and Obelisk
Lake Costinești is in the centre of the resort, between the main access road DC6, Strada Tineretului and the main beach. The lake beside the Obelisk is used by excursion boats and recreational boats.
The Obelisk is considered the resort’s main tourist attraction. The current Obelisk was inaugurated on 3 June 2006 and is 18.5 metres high.
Maritime history
The story of the ship Evangelia is also part of the Costinești coast. The ship was launched on 28 May 1942. On 15 October 1968, it ran aground about 1.5 nautical miles from the resort’s northern beach, in a stretch of natural cliff coast called “Golful francezilor”.
Religious and regional connections
Religious landmarks are located in the resort and in Schitu, within the commune. In Costinești, the Church of Saint John the Baptist was consecrated on 22 June 2003. Its patronal feast is celebrated on 24 June, the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. In the village of Schitu, not in the resort centre, the “Sfânta Elena de la Mare” Monastery was rebuilt; the foundation stone for the new monastic complex was laid on 14 May 1996. The monastery church preserves relics of the Holy Martyrs Zotic, Atal, Camasie and Filip of Niculițel.
The administrative area also provides landscape context: the administrative territory of Costinești commune overlaps with the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0273 “Zona marină de la Capul Tuzla” and the Natura 2000 bird protection area ROSPA0076 “Marea Neagră”.
Festival history
The first edition of the Beach, Please! festival took place in 2022 on Costinești beach. In 2026, the festival held its fifth edition. Yeat returned to Costinești after performing there in 2024 and 2025.
