23 August brings together Tatlageac Lake and the beach with a layered local history. The landscape extends from the Black Sea across a narrow strip of dunes to the lake; the area is also home to settlements from different periods and a monastery on the lakeshore. This gives you three distinct factors to consider when choosing where to stay: the coast, the waterscape and cultural history. You can assess 23 August based on which of these aspects matters most for your stay.

The Coast and Tatlageac Lake

Tatlageac Lake is a fluvio-marine liman on the Black Sea, located within the municipality of 23 August in Constanța County. A strip of dunes, approximately 80 metres wide and around two metres high, separates the lake from the Black Sea. The Constanța–Mangalia railway line runs along this strip. These measurements are approximate and give an idea of the narrow landform between the two bodies of water.

Most of 23 August beach is in a natural state, according to a report from March 2024. Beach conditions can change. Access to the beach is not easy, and road and beach conditions can also vary. Check the route and beach conditions before setting out. This lets you take both the time-specific description of the coast and the practical access advice into account when planning.

Settlement History and the Monastery

Settlements from different periods have been identified in the area. A Greek-Roman settlement is located on a small peninsula on the southwestern side of Tatlageac Lake; it dates from the 3rd century BC to the 6th century AD. A Hellenistic settlement is located on the seashore between the lake and the Black Sea. A Roman settlement is recorded on the northern shore of Tatlageac Lake and on the seashore; it dates from the 2nd to the 4th century AD. These location descriptions refer to different settlements and places, not to a single complex.

The Monastery of the Holy Hierarchs Nicholas and Bretanion stands on the shore of Tatlageac Lake, within the municipality. The monastery was founded in 2003. Its main church is designed in the Romanian architectural style with Byzantine influences and features exterior decorations made of natural stone and brick. Alongside the ancient settlements, the monastery is a more recent religious and architectural focal point.

Tatar wrestling, known locally as Kureș, is among the ongoing traditions in the municipality of 23 August. In 2018, it was announced as part of events for Community Day on 25 August.
