Ostrov: Archaeology, Nature and Wine
Accommodation in Ostrov
Roman archaeological sites, protected landscapes and wine offer different starting points for a trip to Ostrov. If you are looking for hotels in Ostrov, you can first consider which of these themes is especially important to your trip. The archaeological sites tell of different historical periods; the nature reserves have different designations, and the wine experiences range from tastings to introductory courses. This makes it possible to choose Ostrov as a destination based on specific interests.
Archaeology and historical sites
The Ostrov-Ferma 4 archaeological site contains remains from the Roman period, the late Roman period and the early Middle Ages. The thermal building there also offers insight into its architectural features: it had a hypocaust heating system, suggesting sauna rooms and pools of warm water. The heating system is a specific indication of the building’s design; the sauna and warm-water pools are possible interpretations of the complex.
Another connection to Roman history is Durostorum, an important Roman fortress and city on the right bank of the Danube between Sucidava and Axiopolis. The Byzantine fortress of Vicina is distinct from it: it is located on the Danube island of Păcuiul lui Soare, nine kilometres downstream from Ostrov. The two names represent different historical periods, while the island also has a specific geographical connection to Ostrov.
The Dobrudja Village Museum of Dervent is also among the cultural attractions in the commune. Dervent (Crucea de Leac) is home to a skete; the place is associated with an early Christian cemetery that predates the monastery, which was destroyed in the 11th century. Dervent thus adds an early Christian history to the Roman and Byzantine connections.
Nature reserves by Lake Bugeac
Pădurea Esechioi is a 27.7-hectare botanical and zoological nature reserve. It lies on the Oltina Plateau in Ostrov commune, south of Lake Bugeac. The lake itself is a mixed nature reserve and is designated as a Special Protection Area for birds. These descriptions have different emphases: Pădurea Esechioi is classified botanically and zoologically, while the designation for Lake Bugeac also highlights bird protection.
The water connection of Lake Bugeac is also described in more detail: a weir connects it to the Danube and regulates the exchange of water. This means the lake can be understood not only through its protected-area designation but also through its hydrological relationship with the Danube. Together with the location of Pădurea Esechioi south of the lake, this gives you two clearly distinct nature themes to consider when planning your trip.
Wine: production and visitor experiences
The Ostrov winery is located in Ostrov commune and handles the winemaking, storage and bottling of wine. These production steps offer a factual insight into the local wine industry. The visitor experiences explicitly offered to guests are separate: Domeniile Ostrov offers premium wine tastings at its wineries in Lipnița and Ostrov. You should confirm the current arrangements before your trip.
Introductory courses in the art of wine tasting have also been organised at the cross-border Centre for Oenology and Viticulture “Terasele Dunării” in Ostrov commune. Check in advance for current dates. This lets you distinguish between a tasting and an introductory course, rather than planning both as the same experience.
Getting there and choosing a destination
Ostrov can be reached from Adamclisi via the DN3. Check road conditions separately for your travel dates. When deciding between Ostrov and other destinations, you can now weigh up the focus of your trip: archaeological traces from different periods, the nature reserves by Lake Bugeac, or wine-related experiences.
