Klaipėda District: Coastal Trails, Birdlife and Culture
Accommodation in Klaipėda District
In Klaipėda District, trails pass through a variety of landscapes, from coastal stretches and viewpoints to wetlands where migratory birds stop to rest. There are also museums focusing on maritime and regional themes, as well as activities related to amber and water sports. The options range from short points of interest to routes several kilometres long, so you can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you.
Hiking between the coast and the countryside
The six-kilometre “Miško Katedros Takais” hiking trail starts in Juodkrantė. Another option starts in Preila: the “Kuršių Niūrija” hiking trail is five kilometres long, making it the shorter of the two. Local conditions can change, so check for current notices before setting out.
The “Litorina” ecological educational trail passes through the Olandų Kepurė Landscape Reserve. Its features include signs, information boards, viewpoints and shelters. Olandų Kepurė Hill is also a striking feature of the landscape: wave action is continually eroding it, and its slope down to the sea is 20 to 22 metres high. The trail combines information along the route with a landscape shaped by the effects of waves.
Palanga has several cycling routes along the resort and coast. Together, they cover several dozen kilometres. If you prefer to get around on foot, there is also a system of health trails in Klaipėda District: three loop routes have a total length of twelve kilometres. Information about the trails can help you factor different route lengths and types of activity into your travel plans.
Delta, water and birdwatching
The Nemunas Delta Regional Park includes shallow bays of the Curonian Lagoon, wetlands, Rusnė Island and the Ventė Cape peninsula. You can explore the biological diversity of the rivers in the delta by boat from Šilutė, Rusnė, Minija or Ventė. Boat availability and launch points may vary by season. The “Žuvies kelias” programme offers another perspective on the lagoon: it includes a two-hour trip on the historic sailing ship “Dreverna”. Check current sailing times when making specific plans.
At Ventė Cape, a museum and the visitor centre of the ornithological station offer insight into the history of bird migration and bird ringing. For birdwatching, there is a migratory bird rest stop and an observation shelter at Lake Plocis. Another observation tower stands on the western shore of a lake near the road to the village of Minija; from there, you can watch the lake landscape and birdlife. At Lake Plocis, the rest stop and observation shelter are the main features, while the tower near Minija offers views over the lake and its birdlife.
Museums and amber
The Lithuanian Sea Museum includes an aquarium, exhibitions on the history of shipping, a dolphinarium, a rehabilitation centre for Baltic Sea animals and a dolphin-assisted therapy centre. Its offerings bring together marine life, maritime history and the care of Baltic Sea animals. Individual exhibitions and services may change; check what is currently available before visiting.
The Palanga Amber Museum is located in the manor palace of Count Feliksas Tiškevičius in Birutė Park. Its collection comprises more than 30,000 exhibits. Guided tours are offered in Lithuanian, English and Russian; check the latest information about tours before your visit. Palanga also has an amber workshop with educational activities where visitors can make their own amber jewellery or souvenirs. Programmes and participation requirements may change, so it is worth checking in advance.
Active outings and viewpoints
In Neringa, the health trail has nine outdoor fitness machines. The equipment can be adapted for adults of different ages and fitness levels; check its availability on site. Svencelė has a water sports school and is popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers. A reversible cable system for wakeboarding is also located in the Svencelė pond. These activities appeal to different interests on the water and do not need to be part of a single programme.
A notable viewpoint is the 15-metre-high tower in Dreverna, which offers views of the Nagliai Nature Reserve and the Curonian Lagoon. In Radailiai, Dinozaurų Parkas offers a different kind of outing, with more than 40 life-size dinosaurs. The two places offer different experiences: the tower focuses on the landscape and lagoon, while the park features its dinosaur figures.
When choosing destinations, you can weigh up trails, birdwatching, museums and activities on the water. The hiking trail lengths give you a concrete guide to the walk you are planning; the two-hour trip on the “Dreverna” specifies the duration of an outing on the lagoon. For activities that are seasonal or have programmes that may change, it is advisable to check the relevant current information in advance.
