Vilimiškė and its history
Accommodation in Vilimiškė
The history of Vilimiškė spans several periods: the village’s origins, its ties to the Palanga estate, the brickworks’ industrial activity, and the memory of the Holocaust. These topics can be arranged chronologically and also viewed as different ways of understanding the place.
Vilimiškė’s historical development
Vilimiškė was established in the second half of the 16th century following the Valakų reform. Another early landmark is 1639, when the king permitted the Palanga estate to be moved to fields that later written sources refer to as Vilimiškė. These two milestones describe different developments: the first concerns the village’s origins, while the second concerns a royal permission and the later naming of the fields in question. This helps place the early history of the area in context without treating the village’s founding and the relocation of the estate as the same event.
In the 18th century, a manor farm, or, in Lithuanian, palivarkas, was established in Vilimiškė. It served as an administrative and agricultural centre for the lands of the Palanga estate. Vilimiškė was thus also associated with the administration and agricultural use of these estate lands. This function belongs to a different period from the later brickworks: the manor farm represents administration and agriculture, while the brickworks added a production site to the area’s history.
The manor farm, brickworks and transport
In the second half of the 19th century, Juozapas Tiškevičius built a brickworks at the Vilimiškė manor farm. A narrow-gauge railway was built from there to the Palanga pier. Bricks from Vilimiškė were also taken to a port in Palanga and transported from there by steamer to Liepāja, where they were sold. This route identifies a place of production, a port and a place of sale: Vilimiškė, Palanga and Liepāja. The railway to the pier provides another historical transport connection associated with the brickworks. The area’s history therefore encompasses not only brick production, but also several named routes and stages in the transport of the time.
The old Vydmantai–Vilimiškė road also ran through the village. It adds another transport connection to the history of the manor farm and brickworks. The brick route is not the only relevant one in the area’s history: the old road passing through Vilimiškė is also identified as a historic link.
Remembering the Holocaust
Another, fundamentally different historical dimension is the memory of the Holocaust. The former village of Valteriškė, now called Vilimiškė, was home to a ghetto for a time during the Holocaust. This fact is an independent part of the area’s history, alongside its settlement and economic history, and should not be conflated with them. If you are learning about Vilimiškė, this memory deserves its own respectful context. It is an important part of the area’s history and should not be overshadowed by the history of the manor farm or brickworks.
