Šilutė: Discover Cultural Heritage and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Šilutė
Šilutė combines a protected historic town centre with the opportunity to discover the river landscape of Nemunas Delta Regional Park on a boat trip. The town centre is state-protected cultural heritage of national significance. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Šilutė, you can consider whether you would like to devote your trip primarily to architectural and urban history or to an excursion on the water.
Historic Town Centre and Urban History
A prominent landmark in the town centre is the Evangelical Lutheran church. Its tower is 50 metres high, houses three bells and has the largest clock in Lithuania. The church was built in 1926 to a design by the architect K. Gutknecht. Beside the main altar is an 80-square-metre fresco by the painter Richard Pfeifer, depicting 104 people.
The Old Market Square also tells the story of the town: large markets were held there from the 16th century until the Second World War. Old buildings still surround the square, and the stone paving remains beneath the asphalt. In the Old Town, an iron arch bridge also crosses the Šyša; it is an urban monument of Šilutė.
Two further displays bring the town’s history and past life to life in different ways. The 500-metre-long “Šilutės sienos” depicts important events in the town’s history and notable figures from the region. The “Šilutės sekretai” project comprises 20 miniature rooms covered with glass and set into the pavement of Lietuvininkų Street. They illustrate life in historic houses from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
Hugo Šojus Estate and Museum
The state-owned Hugo Šojus Estate, established in Šilutė in 1721, is a building in the late Classical and Historicist styles. Its restrained design is typical of the Klaipėda region. Since 2015, the Hugo Šojus Museum has been housed at the estate. Architecture and museum thus come together in a historic ensemble.
Some of the estate’s former outbuildings house restoration and education centres. These are located in the former outbuildings, not in the main building described here. Together with the museum and the architecture, they give the estate a distinctive place in the town’s history.
Boat Trip and Route
From Šilutė, visitors can discover the river landscape and biodiversity of Nemunas Delta Regional Park on a boat trip. The small-boat harbour at Uosto g. 9 is used for embarkation and disembarkation. Since services and departure arrangements may change, check the latest information before planning your trip.
Another way to include Šilutė in a trip is the “Rusnės sala” route offered by the Šilutė Tourism Centre. It passes through Šilutė and can be travelled by car or bicycle. The two types of excursion are therefore quite different: the boat trip focuses on the river landscape and biodiversity, while the route is designed for travel by car or bicycle. When planning your trip, you can consider these options as distinct from the historic themes of the town centre.
