Discover Šilutė District Municipality
Accommodation in Šilutė District Municipality
In Šilutė District Municipality, delta landscapes meet a diverse cultural and museum history. Almost a quarter of the area of Šilutė District Municipality is occupied by the deltas of the Nemunas and Minija rivers. There are also places on the Curonian Lagoon, manor houses, exhibitions and educational trails. When planning a trip, you can therefore choose a theme to shape your stay: architecture and history, bird migration, or paths through distinctive landscapes.
Delta Locations and the Ventė Peninsula
Cape Ventė is the westernmost point of Šilutė District Municipality. The peninsula lies on the eastern shore of the Curonian Lagoon. A red-brick lighthouse, built in 1852, stands there. It is freely accessible and serves as a viewpoint; check access information before your visit. Birdlife is also a central theme at the cape: the museum presents the history of bird ringing and the study of bird migration. The station at the cape is also home to Europe’s largest traps for catching migratory birds.
A small boat harbour was established in Kintai in 2014 to meet the needs of both fishers and tourists. Water- and land-based tourism activities are offered in the village of Minija, including boating and water skiing. The two places thus each offer their own insight into the maritime side of the destination, without their offerings being interchangeable.
Manor Houses, Schools and Museums
In Šilutė, the Hugo Šojus Manor was established as a state manor in 1721. The elegant building combines Late Classicism and Historicism and features decoration typical of the Klaipėda Region. Since 2015, it has housed the Hugo Šojus Museum. The architecture and museum are therefore brought together in one place: the building itself represents the history of the manor, while the museum offers a distinct focus for a visit.
The former school in Kintai also brings together architectural history and a well-known figure. The Kintai Vydūnas Cultural Centre and Memorial Museum is located in the school building erected in 1705, where Vilhelmas Storosta-Vydūnas worked from 1888 to 1892. In Švėkšna, the exhibition at the Švėkšna Museum spans four halls devoted to ethnography, archaeology, manor history and local history. This breadth of subject matter offers a different approach from places focused on a single person or manor house.
The Vilkėnai Manor estate was built between 1880 and 1897. It includes a two-storey Neo-Renaissance manor house with a tower, as well as a park with a mixed design. By contrast, fishing and everyday life are the focus at the Ethnographic Museum of a Fishing Settlement: it displays fishing and household items, as well as the way of life and activities of a typical fishing farmer from the Klaipėda Region.
The Šilutė Polder Museum is housed in the water-lifting station in Uostadvaris, built in 1907. Access to the facility is restricted. Another prominent technical landmark is the Uostadvaris Lighthouse: it is 18 metres high, is considered a technical heritage monument, and serves as an observation tower with views of the surroundings of Rusnė and Minija. It is no longer used for navigation.
Educational Trails, Marshland and Views
The Aukštumala educational trail is 2,400 metres long and is located in the Aukštumalė telmological reserve. It offers insights into a raised bog, its characteristic plants and animals, and the surrounding landscape. The Tulkiaragė educational trail is 1.8 kilometres long in one direction and runs along a dike by Lake Krokų Lankos. The trails therefore differ both in their stated lengths and in their described surroundings: raised bog and natural history take centre stage at Aukštumala, while Tulkiaragė runs along a dike by the lake.
The Kintai Forestry District educational trail also offers a connection to the Curonian Lagoon: its observation towers provide views across the lagoon. Another distinctive natural attraction is the Great Kintai Thuja. It is considered Lithuania’s largest thuja and is about 19.5 metres high; its crown measures approximately 12 metres across.
These attractions offer different themes for planning a trip: the educational trails focus on marshland, landscapes and views; Cape Ventė on the history of bird ringing and migration. Museums and manor houses complement these natural themes with architectural, local and everyday history. Šilutė District Municipality can therefore be explored as a destination with several distinct cultural and landscape features.
