Vileikiai lies in a transition zone between the Pamarys Lowland and an alluvial delta lowland near the Rupkalvių Bog.

Historical Traces in Vileikiai

About 600 metres east of Vileikiai lies the Rubokai Cemetery. It dates from the 5th to the 8th century and is listed in the Cultural Heritage Register. The surrounding area also has a high concentration of old Evangelical Lutheran parish cemeteries. Thus, a specific site with a defined date sits alongside a broader historic cemetery landscape.

Nature and Landscape in the Nemunas Delta

The Nemunas Delta Regional Park was established to preserve the delta’s landscape, natural ecosystem, and cultural values. The park’s landscape features include bays of the Curonian Lagoon, delta rivers and streams, oxbow lakes, Lake Krokų Lankos, the Aukštumala raised bog, Rusnė Island, and Cape Ventė. This diversity ranges from waterscapes to bog and island environments.

More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the Nemunas Delta; around 180 of them breed there. The figures distinguish between the total number of recorded species and the smaller number of breeding species. The Aukštumalė Reserve protects a raised bog ecosystem with lake complexes, distinctive biocenoses, and rare or endangered plants and animals.

Waterways and Hiking

The rivers and biodiversity of the Nemunas Delta can be explored by boat from Šilutė, Rusnė, Minija, or Ventė. Recreational fishing is permitted in the Nemunas Delta Regional Park in accordance with the applicable regulations. The Tulkiaragė hiking trail can be reached from Šilutė by water via Krokų Lankos and Kampupė.

The Aukštumala hiking trail offers a different perspective: its total round-trip distance is 2,400 metres, and it is located in the Aukštumalė Telmological Reserve. This presents water access to Tulkiaragė and a specific trail through a protected raised bog environment as distinct nature experiences.

The 18-metre-high Uostadvaris Lighthouse is a technical heritage monument and an observation tower overlooking the surroundings of Rusnė and Minija. The restored Uostadvaris water-lifting station houses the Šilutė Polder Museum. The station is privately owned; access is restricted.

Culture and Regional History

The Hugo Scheu Manor in Šilutė was founded in 1721 and is considered an example of late Classicist and Historicist architecture. Since 2015, the Hugo Scheu Museum has been housed in the manor; the Šilutė Tourist Information Centre is also located there. In the Nemunas Delta Regional Park, Skirvytėlė is the only village recognised as a nationally significant architectural monument.

The Macikai Camp Museum is associated with a site where Nazi and Soviet detention systems overlapped. Another regional cultural theme is Kafija: the educational programme includes tastings of various coffee-like drinks and traditional pastries. It can also be organised aboard a boat.
