Specific points of interest for a trip to Švėkšna include an exhibition in the Švėkšna “Saulės” Gymnasium building, historic features in the manor park, mosaics in the pavements and a paved market square. Other options include an augmented reality 3D tour, educational activities about traditional crafts and a tasting. You can plan your visit around local history, architecture, the market or a pre-booked activity.

Exhibition and 3D augmented reality tour

Since 2005, the Švėkšna exhibition has been housed in new premises in the Švėkšna “Saulės” Gymnasium building. Its four rooms are devoted to ethnography, archaeology, manor history and local history. Alongside the manor’s history, the history of the town is therefore a subject in its own right, with other perspectives on the past also represented. If you have specific topics in mind, check current visiting arrangements with the museum; the exhibition may change.

The Švėkšna synagogue offers a different way to explore the past with its augmented reality 3D tour. Participants use a smart device to scan their surroundings and view the generated augmented reality images. If you would like to include the tour in your plans, ask the museum about current availability and booking.

Mosaic path and local history

The “Štetlo paieškos Švėkšnoje” mosaic path features artistic mosaics in Švėkšna’s pavements. The motifs offer insights into local history, the history of the Jewish community and local personalities. While the exhibition covers these topics across four rooms, they appear on the mosaic path as artworks in the pavements. Local history is thus presented in different formats: as an exhibition topic and as a mosaic motif in the town.

Manor park and architecture

Historic park features have been preserved or restored in the manor park. These include the main gates with sections of fencing and garden gates with remnants of a stone wall. The statue of Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, stands on an island in the pond. Other features include a restored sundial, a vase on a pedestal, a circular viewing platform with a balustrade, a staircase with vases, a statue of the Virgin Mary, the “Laisvės angelas” (Angel of Freedom) and small footbridges. The details range from gates and wall remnants to sculptures and features by the water.

The architectural ensemble of Švėkšna also includes a gate in the Classical style and the manor villa “Genovaitė.” The gate serves as the main entrance to the park; the villa was built in 1880 in the Neo-Renaissance style. A pedestrian viaduct over the road connects the park with the churchyard of the Church of St James the Elder. The churchyard in the town center is recommended as the starting point for the “Grafų Pliaterių takais” cycling route. The park, church and cycling route are therefore linked by specific locations, but no information is given about the route’s duration or course.

Market, crafts and tasting

The paved market square is in the center of Švėkšna, where a market is held every Thursday. If you are planning your visit around market day, check the latest information in advance. This lets you include the recurring event in your travel plans without confusing it with the park or architectural features that are there year-round.

The Švėkšna Traditional Crafts Center offers educational activities in traditional crafts, including weaving a straw garden or a straw ornament. These activities must be booked in advance. The “Paprūsės skoniai” tasting includes soup, Kastinys and homemade bread kvass. If you would like to include it in your plans, ask the Švėkšna Traditional Crafts Center about the offering.
