Aalborg Municipality: Art, Viking Heritage and Nature

Aalborg Municipality offers a wide range of themes for a trip: art and architecture, traces of the Viking Age, island trails and extensive natural landscapes. The ones that interest you most can shape the focus of your trip planning—from museum exhibitions and events to birdwatching and hiking.

The Egholm ferry runs every half hour between Aalborg and Egholm. Check the timetable before travelling, as departure patterns may change. Egholm is an island in the Limfjord within the municipality; several hiking trails start at the ferry landing. On the island, coastal meadows, uncultivated land, forests and field paths shape habitats for plants and animals.

Art, Architecture and Events

At Kunsten, you can see Danish and international art from the 20th century to the present day. The permanent collection comprises almost 4,000 works. The building is also part of the Kunsten experience: the museum is housed in a white marble building designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Every year, Kunsten holds 200 lectures, concerts, family workshops, guided tours and other activities; individual programmes vary.

The Utzon Center features a permanent exhibition dedicated to Jørn Utzon, creator of the Sydney Opera House. Its programme also includes workshops, lectures, events, educational activities, guided tours and city walks. The dates and formats on offer may vary. In this way, the centre combines architectural themes with a variety of event formats, while the permanent exhibition focuses on Utzon.

The Viking Age and Early Industry

Lindholm Høje is Denmark’s largest Viking Age burial site. It was used for around 600 years, from approximately 400 AD until shortly before 1000 AD. The exhibition features a virtual Viking helmet and an interactive experience in which you can row a Viking ship. Godthåb Hammerværk offers a glimpse into another chapter of history: the early industrial site has been preserved, along with its buildings, equipment and waterways. The preservation of these various elements makes the site a particularly vivid testament to early industry, with its history extending beyond a single building.

Trails, Fjord Landscapes and Moorland

Several areas offer a variety of landscapes to explore. Guldbækstien is a hiking trail of around five kilometres along the Guldbækken. At Halkær Sø, there are trails and birdwatching towers from which to observe birdlife. Cycle route 102 runs around the lake and the adjacent inlet of the Limfjord; from there, you can enjoy views across the river valley. The trails and towers are geared towards birdwatching, while Route 102 offers a way to experience the surroundings by bicycle.

Hammer Bakker, in turn, encompasses beech forests, open heaths, plains, lakes and ponds. The municipality’s natural areas include hiking and mountain biking routes, shelters and dog forests. These facilities are part of the wider picture of the natural areas; they should not be understood as features of every individual area.

At around 7,700 hectares, Lille Vildmose is Denmark’s largest protected land area. Observation towers, boardwalks, viewpoints and platforms offer different perspectives on the landscape. Visitors can watch moose and experience the restored Birkesø and its rich birdlife. The area known as Mellemområdet can be explored independently, free of charge. Egholm also offers a distinctive natural contrast: plants and wildlife can be found in the coastal meadows, on uncultivated land, in forests and along the field paths. Together with the hiking trails starting at the ferry landing, this makes the island an option to include in your trip plans for time outdoors.

At Aalborg Zoo, you can encounter wildlife from around the world, learn about their way of life and take part in various activities. Halkær Mølle Nature Centre offers year-round activities in Halkær Ådal and the Aalborg Fjordland. Individual activities may vary.
