Lundby: Discover Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Lundby
Lundby Bakker is a protected natural area, and Lundby is also designated as an area of valuable cultural heritage. The village’s history includes a regular village layout and historic buildings. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on nature, outdoor activities or cultural heritage.
Terrain and Forest
Lundby Bakker was formed during the last Ice Age as a terminal moraine. The area is very hilly, with deep ravines and steep slopes. Alsbjerg, at 73 metres, and Risbjerg, at 83 metres, are the highest points; Risbjerg is ten metres higher.
The forest in Lundby Krat consists mainly of oak and beech, with hazel and black alder also growing in the southeast. Lundby Krat is designated as a natural forest without regular forestry management, and is also an old forest that was once grazed. About 60 bird species have been recorded in Lundby Krat.
The two natural areas differ in their focus: Lundby Bakker is shaped by its glacial origins and terrain, while Lundby Krat is defined by its trees, forest status and former use.
Facilities and Routes
At Festpladsen by Lundby Bakker, there are several picnic table sets, a barbecue area, a fire pit and a toilet. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit; details like these can change.
The circular route through Lundby Krat can be started at the pedestrian tunnel under Hadsund Landevej or at the car park by the dog forest at Hadsund Landevej 255. Check the current route conditions before setting off.
Mountain Biking near Gistrup
Near Gistrup, an approximately six-kilometre mountain biking route runs through the hilly terrain of Lundby Bakker, with many challenging climbs and descents. The black-marked challenges are intended for experienced riders; a green-marked option is for less experienced riders. The route length and colour codes answer different planning questions: the length indicates the approximate distance, while the markings indicate the relevant skill level. As route conditions and marking information can change, check them before your ride.
For planning purposes, the circular route differs from the mountain biking route: for the circular route, you choose between starting points; for the mountain biking route, the distance, terrain and skill level are key.
Village Layout and Cultural Heritage
Lundby has the regular layout of a linear village along a road; the Danish term for this is vejforteby. The term describes a regular village layout aligned with a road and refers to the village plan as a whole, not to an individual building.
Lundby Hedehus is an old thatched house in the legally protected natural area of Lundby Bakker, and can be used by prior arrangement. Alsbjerghuset is a small farmstead from the 18th or 19th century. Kongehøj is one of the prehistoric monuments south of Lundby.
The dates represented therefore range from prehistory to the 18th or 19th century, without merging the two periods into a single historical picture.
