Store Restrup combines a hotel stay with a setting shaped by history and landscape. At its heart are the listed main building, the restored farmyard and the estate’s eventful history. There are also facilities for conferences and seminars, as well as a restaurant. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether historic buildings, the estate’s development or a business stay with seasonally inspired cuisine matters most to you.

Estate, buildings and landscape

The three-winged main building has been listed since 1918. The protected site also includes a wall with pillars to the east and the moat to the west. A five-metre-wide masonry bridge with four arches crosses the moat west of the main building. Together with lakes, a park, an amphitheatre, large lawns and avenues, the restored farmyard forms a historic ensemble. The architectural details and landscape features show different aspects of the estate: its protected historic fabric on the one hand, and the carefully designed setting of the farmyard on the other.

Estate division and educational history

The estate’s history includes a significant change in its structure. In 1912 and 1914, the estate was divided in two stages into a total of 50 smallholder holdings. Two years separated the two stages of the division. Another historical thread concerns the old main building: an adult education centre was established there in 1913 and, five years later, in 1918, it was converted into a dedicated domestic science school for smallholders. These two developments took place close together in time but relate to different subjects: the division changed the structure of the estate, while the conversion changed how the old main building was used as an educational institution. The year 1918 links this school history chronologically with the beginning of the main building’s listed status; it marks two distinct events.

Cultural heritage and landscape

Store Restrup’s cultural heritage also includes Troldkirken. In addition, Store Restrup Manor and large parts of the surrounding landscape are part of the wider cultural environment No. 84. This classification extends the view of the manor to its landscape context, shifting the focus from the architectural details of the main building and bridge. If you are interested in historic places for their setting in the landscape, this aspect complements the estate’s architectural and educational history.

Conferences, seminars and cuisine

Store Restrup offers rooms for conferences and seminars in a historic setting. If a business event is the main reason for your trip, these rooms are a practical consideration when choosing a destination. At the Store Restrup Slotshotel restaurant, the cuisine is inspired by seasonal regional ingredients from the land and sea in North Jutland. Menus and service arrangements may change, so check the restaurant’s current information before making plans. Conference rooms and seasonal cuisine address different considerations: the rooms suit business events, while the cuisine reflects a particular culinary approach.
