Hou: Beach, Harbour and Culture
Accommodation in Hou
Whether you want to relax by the water, include a coastal route in your plans, or are interested in architecture and local history, Hou offers several distinct points of interest. These include the beach, Hou Harbour Bath, a section of the North Sea Trail, and cultural sites such as the church and Hou Battery.
Beach and bathing conditions
Hou Beach is approximately 3 kilometres long. Its bathing water is classified as excellent—the highest category. Beach length and water classification describe different aspects: the length indicates the extent of the beach, while the classification rates the bathing water. If you are planning your stay around swimming, you can consider the size of the beach and the water quality separately.
Hou Beach has a public toilet, a life jacket and a waste bin. These specific facilities add to the information about the beach and its bathing water.
Harbour bath and harbour
Hou Harbour Bath is a different swimming option from the beach, located at the far end of Hou Harbour. The water is about 1 metre deep at its bathing jetty. The jetty also has a crane that enables people in wheelchairs to go swimming. Different details are therefore relevant when choosing between the beach and the harbour bath: for the beach, the approximate length and bathing-water classification are the main considerations; at the harbour bath, the location in the harbour, the approximate depth at the jetty and the crane are important points of reference.
Hou Marina has room for more than 200 sailing boats and motorboats. This also makes Hou a destination for people interested in marinas for recreational boats. Swimming spots and the harbour can be considered separate ways to enjoy the water, without treating them as the same offering.
Coastal route and wind art
Between Hals and Hou, the North Sea Trail follows the Kattegat coast. This section offers a different way to experience the coast than staying at a single beach: the North Sea Trail is a coastal route between two towns, while the beach information refers to a swimming spot in Hou. If you are weighing up different kinds of coastal holiday, you can consider the swimming spot and the route as separate travel interests.
At the end of Hou Mole, where North Beach begins, stands the sculpture Vindharpen, erected in 1994. When the wind passes through it, it produces sounds—but only in a westerly wind. Its sound is therefore dependent on a specific wind direction. Vindharpen links a precisely identified coastal location with a work of art whose effect depends on the wind.
Church and the history of Hou Battery
Hou Church is a historicist church dating from 1900, built to a design by Vilhelm Ahlemann. Construction began in 1899, and the church was completed in time for its inauguration on 14 October 1900. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic forms. Inside, whitewashed walls and flat, plastered ceilings define the space. The church’s construction date and architect are one aspect; the combination of architectural styles and the interior design are another.
Hou Battery was decommissioned in 1817. Today, two cannons can be seen there, and information about the battery’s history is available. An observation tower offers views over the Kattegat; climbing is possible on its side. The history, views and climbing are different aspects of this site. You can decide whether you are more interested in its historical traces, the view over the water or the opportunity to climb.
