Aalborg can be explored through a range of interests: art and architecture, local history, maritime themes or nature. When planning your stay, you can decide which of these to focus on, depending on whether you want to prioritise exhibitions, cultural activities, outdoor pursuits or a ferry crossing.

Art, architecture and local history

On Aalborg’s waterfront, the Utzon Center brings together architecture, design and art through exhibitions, conferences, meetings and culinary experiences. It is both a visitor attraction and an event venue. At DEN KLODSEDE BY, visitors can build their own architectural creations from LEGO; details of the activities may change.

At the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, the art collection and the building’s architecture come together. The collection comprises nearly 4,000 works of modern and contemporary art and spans more than 100 years of art history. The building was designed by Alvar Aalto with the support of Elissa Aalto and Jean-Jacques Baruël. Most of the exhibition rooms make use of natural, indirect light wherever possible; the design gently distributes it throughout the space.

The Gråbrødrekloster Museet is located three metres below Algade. It tells the story of the Franciscan monastery that stood there from its establishment in the 1240s until its dissolution in 1530. The Aalborg Historiske Museum offers a different time frame: it presents the city’s history from around the year 750 to its later development into a thriving industrial city. Aalborg emerged at that time in connection with a trading site on the Østerå, which followed a different course then. Thus, a specific underground site and a broader overview of the city’s history are presented as distinct museum themes.

Maritime themes, music and street art

Springeren – Maritimt Oplevelsescenter combines a museum with an experience centre. Visitors can go inside a submarine and explore model ships related to Aalborg’s maritime history. Music offers another way to experience local culture: Musikkens Hus is home to the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and attracts international soloists and guest conductors to Aalborg.

Nordkraft is a cultural and leisure centre created by transforming a former power station. Its facilities include a theatre, two concert halls for rhythmic music, a cinema, exhibition spaces, an art school and extensive sports facilities. If you are interested in public art in the urban environment, you can explore Aalborg’s street art on a self-planned walk featuring more than 50 murals. The number of works and the materials for the walk may change.

Food is another possible interest: The Lighthouse is Aalborg’s first permanent street-food market and offers dishes from around the world. Its status and offerings may change. Street art can be explored as a focus in its own right, while the market provides a culinary connection; the two themes offer different reasons to discover Aalborg.

Nature, trails and excursions

Østerådalen Nord is a protected natural area of about 100 hectares, close to Aalborg city centre. The Østerådalstien trail runs from Aalborg city centre through Østerådalen Nord and South to Dall Møllevej near Svanemølleparken in Svenstrup. In places, it shares its route with Hærvejen, a national and international cycling route.

Located directly on the Limfjord, Vestre Fjordpark covers 16.5 hectares. Its facilities include a Tarzan course in the water, a forest course with a zip line, a water playground, trampolines and a slide on the roof of the lifeguard building. At Aalborg Zoo, visitors can experience wildlife from around the world, learn about how animals live and take part in activities for the whole family. Individual activities and programmes may change. The nature reserve, park and zoo each offer a different focus: protected landscape, play and physical activities, or wildlife and learning.

The Egholm ferry connects Aalborg with Egholm; the crossing takes five minutes. If you plan to take it, check the timetable in advance. This lets you choose which themes—museums, local history, nature or a ferry connection—you want to shape your trip to Aalborg.
