Retschwil is a village in the municipality of Hitzkirch in the Hochdorf district of the canton of Lucerne. It lies on the eastern slope of the Erlosen and on the shore of Lake Baldegg. The village’s character is shaped by scattered hamlets, farms and houses on the sloping hillsides and by the lake. Compared with the opposite shore, the Retschwil side of the lake is sparsely settled. This brings together a rural settlement pattern and a lakeside location.

Lakeside scenery and the lake

Lake Baldegg, which borders Retschwil, is largely undeveloped. Belts of trees and reeds, as well as species-rich marsh meadows, line its shore. The lake is also a nationally significant amphibian spawning site and a stopover for migratory birds. These ecological features shape the natural environment around Retschwil by the lake.

In Retschwil, information boards explain the aeration of Lake Baldegg. They give the subject of the lake a tangible place in the visitor information available locally. Anyone interested in the landscape will find information about the lake’s aeration alongside details about the shore areas. It is also useful to know that Retschwil has neither a village square with a fountain nor a church.

Cycling tours and routes

The Karin Thürig Circuit is an 11.57-kilometre round-trip cycling route rated easy, with very low fitness requirements. From Retschwil, it follows the cycle path along the lake towards Ermensee or Hitzkirch to the Stäfligen junction, then continues to Nunwil and back to Retschwil. The paved route is suitable for road bikes, inline skates, bicycles, horse-drawn carriages and walks on foot. Its seasonal suitability depends on the weather.

The Three Lakes Tour offers a longer circuit: it is 55.67 kilometres long, rated moderate and described as requiring only a light level of fitness. The route runs from Baldegg via Retschwil to Richensee; from Retschwil, it also climbs to Herlisberg and continues to Beromünster. Compared with the Karin Thürig Circuit, both its distance and difficulty are rated differently. Its seasonal suitability may also vary.

A section of the circular route around Lake Baldegg runs right along the shore to Retschwil. Trail conditions vary along the full circuit. For navigation, it is therefore worth checking the specific section rather than assuming the route has a uniform character.

Events and local history

slowUp Seetal is a recurring car-free event around Lake Baldegg. The tenth edition was scheduled for Sunday, 16 August 2026, from 10:00 to 17:00. It is open to cyclists, pedestrians and skaters. Check the dates and route for each edition.

In the 2024 edition, the 24.5-kilometre route ran through Hochdorf, Gelfingen, Hitzkirch, Altwis, Mosen, Ermensee, Richensee, Retschwil and Nunwil. It was closed to motorised traffic from 10:00 to 17:00. The IGSR runs a food and drink stand for slowUp Seetal in Retschwil; dates depend on the programme for each year.

Local history is also reflected in specific motifs: the lion on Retschwil’s coat of arms refers to the Lords of Rinach, who owned property in Retschwil, including a mill. The traditional IGSR Herlisberg-Retschwil ski race originally ran from the Herlisberg restaurant to the former Retschwil schoolhouse. The current route no longer goes as far as Retschwil.

Getting there and your stay

At present, you need a private car to get to Retschwil. As this access situation may change, it is advisable to check travel information again before setting out. When choosing where to stay, it helps to keep the village’s different features in mind: the sparsely settled lakeside, the protected shore areas, and the cycling routes, which vary in length and difficulty rating. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to your interests without treating the different routes and events as equivalent.
