Hohenrain – Cultural History and Landscape
Accommodation in Hohenrain
If you are looking for a hotel in Hohenrain, you can explore the destination through its cultural history, landscape and activities throughout the year. The Johanniterkommende and the Roten Tower are considered landmarks of the municipality. Roman remains in Ottenhusen, trails on the Lindenberg and the varied landscape offer further inspiration for planning your trip.
Cultural history around the Roten Tower
The Roten residential tower was built between 1150 and 1490. In the 13th century, the Johanniterkommende served as a pilgrims’ hostel and, at the same time, as the administrative centre of an extensive estate in the Seetal and the surrounding area. The history of the place therefore extends beyond individual buildings and is connected with the former role of the commandery in the region.
The exhibition in the Roten Tower provides information about the landscape, the history of the Johanniterkommende and its knights. A twelve-minute film explores the formation of the Seetal in connection with the Reuss Glacier. Other exhibition features include a Gothic room with a barrel vault and inscriptions dating from 1547. Binoculars are available for views of the Central Swiss mountains.
The gatehouse and rectory of the former Johanniterkommende are also notable for their cultural history. Alongside Heidegg Castle, they are among the canton of Lucerne’s oldest secular buildings preserved intact. Massive sections of the walls and parts of the interior date back to the founding of the commandery. Nearby in Lieli, the Nünegg castle ruins feature a spiral staircase and a viewing platform above the top of the wall.
Roman remains in Ottenhusen
The ruins of a Roman villa discovered in Ottenhusen in 1849 are believed to be more than 2,000 years old. In the immediate vicinity of the Roman estate and along the path to a nearby barbecue area in the woods, information boards describe life in the Roman Empire. The archaeological site in Ottenhusen is open to visitors free of charge seven days a week.
Another landmark is the twelve-metre-high wooden Roman Tower. From there, the view stretches far across the Alps and into the Seetal. The villa, information boards and tower offer different ways to engage with the Roman heritage: as an archaeological site, through explanations of life at the time, and through views of the landscape.
Hiking trails and landscape
Hohenrain and its surroundings invite you to hike, run and cycle on the sunny slopes of the Lindenberg. The municipality has well-maintained hiking and cycling trails. One specific hike starts at Hochdorf railway station and leads via Hohenrain to Lieli.
Meadows, fields, deep-green forests and Lake Baldegg shape Hohenrain’s natural and cultural landscape. A distinctive natural area is the Ballmoos raised bog in Lieliwald, at an elevation of 845 metres. It is one of the last mountain pine raised bogs on the Swiss Plateau and is botanically diverse. Plants found there include rare sedge species and the carnivorous sundew.
Chapels and activities throughout the year
The pilgrimage chapel of Maria zum Schnee in Ibenmoos invites visitors to pause quietly and pray. The Seetal Chapel Trail includes, among others, the Chapel of Maria zum Schnee in Ibenmoos, Kleinwangen, and the Chapel of St Wendelin in Lieli. Alongside architectural history and nature, religious sites therefore offer another distinct theme to explore.
Activities in the surrounding area also vary with the seasons: in the summer months, Lake Baldegg and Lake Hallwil offer opportunities for swimming. During the winter months, you can use a small ski lift and a cross-country ski trail at nearby Horben. These seasonal activities offer a different focus from the hiking, running and cycling trails on the Lindenberg.
