Hochdorf: Nature on Lake Baldegg and Local History
Accommodation in Hochdorf
For a trip to Hochdorf, you can plan nature watching on Lake Baldegg and local history as separate highlights. Ronfeld and the nature trail focus on habitats and species; the Historic Walk, the local museum and the Reformed Church offer insights into different aspects of history. The Braui Cultural Centre adds a varied programme.
Nature on Lake Baldegg
Ronfeld is a nature area on the southern shore of Lake Baldegg in Hochdorf, enhanced by Pro Natura. Two large flood basins with fluctuating water levels, species-rich flower meadows replacing former intensively fertilised meadows, and newly planted trees and shrubs shape the area. An observation hut built in 2007 lets visitors watch white storks, kingfishers and grey herons, as well as dragonflies hunting insects, without disturbing the animals.
From April to October, Pro Natura Lucerne offers supervised observation sessions at Ronfeld once a month. If you plan to attend one, check the specific dates before your trip. The Pro Natura nature trail on Lake Baldegg is another way to learn about the surroundings and their habitats: the 4.06-kilometre themed trail runs between Hochdorf station and Baldegg station. Five marked observation stations with richly illustrated panels provide information about habitats and typical animal and plant species. The natural gravel path is suitable for pushchairs and for the whole family.
Historic Sites and Culture
The Hochdorf Historic Walk takes in 31 historic buildings and two fountains, each marked with informative signs. The signs explain their historical significance, architecture, and former and current use. A map and companion booklet have been published for the walk; guided tours of the buildings and fountains can be booked through the Hochdorf municipal administration. The walk is accessible on the S9 to Hochdorf.
For a different perspective on local history, the Hochdorf local museum presents stories and exhibits from the region, from the 19th century to the present day. Topics include the development of Hochdorf, local stories, and industry, business, crafts and families. The museum is in the basement of the Avanti school building.
The churches also offer tangible insights into history and design. A place of worship stood on the site of today’s church square from an early date. The church mentioned in an indulgence letter from 962 was probably dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours; it is believed to have been consecrated as a church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The Reformed Church on Luzernstrasse was built in the Heimatstil style and occupied in 1929. The restored round window in the choir, created by Giuseppe Scartezzini, depicts the calming of the storm at sea and is now on the west wall. Romano Galizia designed the interior and created the windows, tapestry, communion table and lectern.
The Braui Cultural Centre complements these historic sites with a varied cultural programme. It includes comedy, classical music, pop, small-scale performances, folklore and theatre. Hochdorf therefore brings together different cultural highlights: historic buildings and exhibits, church architecture, and a programme spanning a range of stage and music genres.
