Hämikon is a village in the municipality of Hitzkirch in the Hochdorf district of the canton of Lucerne. It lies northeast of Hitzkirch in the Lucerne part of the Seetal valley. When choosing a destination, there are several things to explore here: the landscape and outdoor activities on Hämikerberg, a regional beer trail, and places with religious and farming history. You can decide whether to focus your stay mainly on outdoor activities or also include local culture and places to stop for refreshments.

Landscape and outdoor activities on Hämikerberg

A moorland area considered idyllic is located on Hämikerberg, on the high plateau of the Lindenberg. Hämikerberg is used for hiking, jogging, mountain biking, horse riding and cross-country skiing. The mix of activities is partly seasonal and appeals to different interests and travel times. If outdoor activities are a priority, you can take the time of year into account when planning and consider which of these activities suits your stay.

The “Hike above the Fog (Hämikon Berg – Horben – Hämikon Berg)” starts and ends in Hämikon, Berg. It is classified as a moderately difficult hike requiring a moderate level of fitness, and is suitable for winter hiking. Its start and finish points and stated difficulty level therefore provide concrete guidance for planning.

The “Views of the Lake on Hämikerberg and the Unexplored Gorge” hike offers a different perspective. It goes over Hämikerberg and through the Gitzitobel gorge. The views from Hämikerberg are considered particularly expansive and impressive, while Gitzitobel is considered a hidden natural haven with remarkable biodiversity. More than 20 orchid species are said to grow there. The two hikes therefore have different focuses: the Hike above the Fog specifies its difficulty, fitness requirements and suitability for winter hiking, while the Views of the Lake hike centers on the views and the gorge.

You can also try Spiel-Golf on Hämikerberg during the Hike above the Fog, a mix of golf and mini golf. Check whether this activity is available before your visit.

Architecture, chapel and traditions

“Little Ballenberg” on Hämikerberg is a collection of old farmhouses from Central Switzerland. The ensemble complements the landscape and hiking themes with a connection to traditional farm architecture. If you are interested in historic buildings as well as outdoor activities, it offers a different focus from the moorland, views and gorge.

The Peace Chapel in Hämikon, also known as “Mary, Queen of Peace,” is made available to the Hitzkirch parish for Roman Catholic services. It was built in 1949–1950 in honour of the Virgin Mary and in remembrance of the Queen of Peace’s perpetual protection. On 20 July 1950, honorary citizen Bishop Dr. Hilarin Felder consecrated the chapel. Its name, religious dedication and consecration date give the site a clearly defined historical and religious character.

The traditional Ascension Day procession in Hitzkirch also passes through Hämikon: held every year on Ascension Day, the procession continues via Hämikon to Müswangen. If you are interested in the tradition, it can help you choose when to travel; check the date for the relevant year.

Regional refreshments and getting there

The Seetaler Beer Trail starts at the Gasthaus Hämikerberg in Hämikon. At the start, guests can enjoy a first beer and a regional speciality at the Hämikerberg restaurant. The route then continues to two farmers, where visitors can sample two more beers. This way, the trail combines refreshments at the start with beer tastings along the way. Participating farms and offer details may change, so check the latest information in advance.

To get there by bus, take bus 106 from Hitzkirch railway station to Hämikon, Berg. Check the timetable for your travel date before setting off.
