Lieli is a locality in the municipality of Hohenrain, in the Hochdorf district of the canton of Lucerne. Until 1 January 2007, Lieli was an independent municipality; it was then incorporated into Hohenrain. For trip planning, the main highlights are Nünegg Castle Ruins, St. Wendelin Chapel, and several specifically described hiking and e-bike routes. If you are looking for hotels in Lieli, you can first consider whether the historic buildings or travelling along a route will play a greater role in your stay.

Nünegg Castle Ruins and Views of the Seetal Valley

Along with Kastelen Castle near Alberswil, Nünegg Castle Ruins are the largest castle ruins in the canton of Lucerne. They underwent extensive restoration from 2014 to 2016 and are protected by the Confederation and the canton. The viewing platform offers views across the Seetal Valley and of the ruins themselves. Important for planning: the platform is accessible only during the day. Plan your visit for daylight hours, but do not assume that other parts of the site have the same access restrictions.

There is also an interactive cultural adventure story at the castle site: participants can follow Johann, Elisabeth, or Burkhard and help find the missing seal. This adds a story to a visit to Nünegg, rather than focusing solely on the structure and the views.

St. Wendelin Chapel and Local History

Another historical highlight is the chapel dedicated to St. Wendelin, patron saint of farmers. It was built around 1590 to protect people and animals from the plague and other epidemics. Inside the chapel is a cycle of paintings depicting Wendelin, painted on twelve large wooden panels. The building’s history, dedication, and painted cycle offer different ways to explore this place: the chapel tells of both its historical protective purpose and the depiction of the saint.

A pilgrimage route also leads directly to a chapel: one of three pilgrimage paths to the “Maria zum Schnee” Chapel runs from Lieli via Stelen. This makes the route different from those on which Lieli is a stop along a longer journey, for travellers who want to plan their tour around a specific destination.

Hikes and E-Bike Routes

A regional hike leads from Hochdorf railway station via Hohenrain to Lieli, with Nünegg Castle Ruins recommended as a stop along the way. The route then continues to Gelfingen. For this hike, take the S9 to Hochdorf railway station; the return journey is from Gelfingen railway station. The route therefore starts and ends at different railway stations. Before setting out, check the S9 timetable and plan your outward and return journeys accordingly.

Another hiking option is the “Hitzkirch–Horben–Lieli–Hitzkirch” circular hike. It leads from Hitzkirch via Müswangen and the Horben alpine inn to Lieli, then returns to Hitzkirch via Heidegg Castle. You can take the S9 to Hitzkirch for this hike, and the return journey is also by S9. Unlike the hike from Hochdorf to Gelfingen, the described circular route returns to Hitzkirch.

The “Schongau–Hohenrain Panorama” hike also reaches Nünegg Castle Ruins in Lieli after a detour in the direction of Horben. If you would rather travel by e-bike, you can include Lieli on the eastern section of the “Herzschlaufe Seetal” route: SwitzerlandMobility Route 599 runs from Eschenbach via Hohenrain, Lieli, and Horben to Lenzburg. The routes therefore differ not only in how you travel, but also in their course and purpose: one leads to the ruins, one is described as a circular hike, and the e-bike route passes through Lieli on its way between the named endpoints.

The Landscape Around Lieli

The Hubel near Lieli is part of the area’s geological history: it is a typical rounded hill formed by a glacier. Sandstone also reaches the surface in places above Lieli. These geological features add another perspective to the history of the buildings and chapel: alongside the castle ruins and sacred art, the shaped landscape and its rock formations are also distinct themes to explore during a stay.
