Monastery History and Churches

The Eschenbach convent was moved to its present location in Obereschenbach in 1309. In 1588, the Lucerne government called on the Augustinian nuns to join the stricter Cistercian order. In 1675, the relics of Saint Vincent were brought from Rome to Eschenbach. These dates tell of different stages in the monastery’s history.

The convent church was built later, between 1909 and 1912, as a separate church. It is designed in the Neo-Baroque style and has a central dome. Its furnishings include three richly decorated altars with extensive gilding. A small tympanum bearing the so-called Tetragrammaton rises from the center of the church roof. The convent complex, comprising the Cistercian convent, parish church and mortuary chapel, is listed as a Category A cultural property in the Swiss KGS inventory, based on the 2026 Federal Inventory.

The Eschenbach parish church is a separate building: August Hardegger built it in the Neo-Baroque style as a three-aisled church. Its decorative interior furnishings make it look almost like a Rococo church. Eschenbach’s church architecture thus pairs Neo-Baroque forms with furnishings reminiscent of another style.

Moor, Nature Trail and Time Outdoors

The protected Mettlenmoos is divided into a nature conservation zone and a buffer zone. Along the Moos Nature and Information Trail in Eschenbach, information panels explain the wetland and moor habitats, their importance to ecological balance and how they have changed. The moor adventure trail can be explored independently. Check local conditions before travelling.

The trails cater to different interests: the moor adventure trail focuses on independent exploration, while the information panels explain habitats and ecological connections. If you plan to spend time outdoors, you’ll also find barbecue areas with playgrounds: one open to the public in Frauenwald and another by the gravel pit in Eschenbach.

Hiking to Lake Baldegg

The suggested hike “From Eschenbach to Lake Baldegg” starts in Eschenbach LU and runs through Frauenwald rather than following the road towards Oeggenringen. The final section follows the shore of Lake Baldegg to the Baldegg lido. Conditions along the lakeshore may vary.
