Ermensee combines a historic village centre on the Aabach with an open valley plain of meadows and farmland, as well as fruit trees on the outskirts. The stream flows in the open along its entire length through the old settlement. If you are considering Ermensee as a place to stay, you can explore the historic traces in the village and the activities throughout the wider Seetal valley separately.

Historic Village Centre and Buildings

The southern part of the historic village centre has retained a particularly original character. There, the ObermĂĽhle stands where the Aabach enters the village. The mill is documented as early as 1256; the imposing three-storey gabled building by the stream dates from 1632.

St. Jakob Chapel also features prominently in the village’s architectural history: it is a late Gothic stone building dating from 1605. The Elmiger farmhouse is listed as a cantonal monument.

The Aabach was once important to the local economy, too: three mills once operated along it. From 1723 to 1932, Ermensee held a goods and livestock market twice a year. Three stone crosses at the village entrances mark the boundaries of former judicial districts.

Landscape and Traces of the Past

The undeveloped valley plain encompasses extensive meadows and farmland, while dense stands of fruit trees grow on the outskirts. The Aabach is designated as a linear natural feature in Chapter L1-2 of the cantonal structure plan. The village landscape therefore brings together open countryside and a stream that also plays a role in the historic settlement.

South of the present-day village lies Herrenberg, a small hill. A Roman manor once stood there. The Herrenberg drumlin is also a relic of the last Ice Age.

Hiking, Cycling and Getting There

There are many trails for hiking, cycling and inline skating throughout the wider Seetal valley. Hiking on the Erlosen is associated with an unforgettable panorama. At Lake Baldegg, visitors can stroll along the shore.

A cycling tour from Hallwyl Castle via Heidegg Castle passes through Mosen to Ermensee. It highlights places by the Aabach in Ermensee where visitors can stop and relax. The Mosen–Baldegg Monastery hiking trail leads to Ermensee.

Ermensee has a stop on the Seetal railway, with a wooden-clad waiting shelter. The Seetal railway opened in 1883. For the Karin ThĂĽrig round trip, Ermensee can be reached on the S9 from Lucerne or Lenzburg; possible destinations include Baldegg or Ermensee. Check the current timetable before travelling.

The Lichterschwemme on 6 March

Every year on 6 March, the feast day of Fridolin, the missionary of the faith, Ermensee holds the Lichterschwemme. After nightfall, children set candle-covered wooden structures on boards afloat on the Aabach from the bridge walkway; the structures then drift downstream. This makes the date a special occasion in the village’s history. If you would like to plan your trip around the Lichterschwemme, check the programme for your chosen date.
