In Gelfingen, culture, activity and enjoyment come together in a range of offerings. Heidegg Castle is the main cultural attraction; hikes follow routes with various starting and ending points, while wine experiences range from a guided tour to a themed trail. There are designated swimming areas at Lake Baldegg. If you are considering Gelfingen as a destination for a hotel stay, these specific themes can help you plan your days around your interests.

Heidegg Castle and its history

Heidegg Castle is considered the oldest known residential building in the Canton of Lucerne. The residential museum in the castle tells the story of its last noble owners: Lucerne native Louis Pfyffer von Heidegg, his wife Caroline Slidell and their descendants. The spacious attic, dating from the 17th century, offers another glimpse into the past. It houses a unique marble-run play structure. The building, family history and play structure each offer a different way to engage with the castle during your visit.

From Gelfingen railway station, you can reach Heidegg Castle in a 20-minute walk along an official trail marked in yellow. Heidegg Castle provides step-free access to all buildings and grounds for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs; access inside may vary depending on the area. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Hikes with different starting points

The Gelfingen–Horben–Baldegg hike is 15.37 kilometres long, rated easy, and runs from Gelfingen railway station to Baldegg railway station. The Chapel Trail is 18.46 kilometres long, starts at Baldegg Kloster railway station and ends at Hitzkirch railway station; it passes via Heidegg. The information on length, difficulty and start and end points helps you assess the routes based on the course you prefer. Heidegg lies along the Chapel Trail, while the Gelfingen–Horben–Baldegg hike explicitly starts at Gelfingen railway station. Trail conditions may vary by season.

The Seetal Wine Trail also runs from Mosen to Gelfingen, passing through vineyards. Along the way, you can discover wineries, wines and spirits. Tastings must be arranged separately with the respective wineries. This sets the Wine Trail apart from the railway-station-to-railway-station hikes mentioned above, thanks to its focus on wine and vineyards.

Swimming at Lake Baldegg

Swimming in Lake Baldegg is permitted in designated areas in Gelfingen. A nature reserve lies outside these swimming areas. A swimming spot at the nearby lake is maintained by the municipality and is free to use. Follow the local signs and check conditions before swimming. This will help you distinguish the designated swimming areas from the protected zones when planning your visit.

Wine and regional experiences

Heidegg Winery is located in Gelfingen, in the Lucerne Seetal, directly below Heidegg Castle. It produces more than 20 wines as well as a wide variety of spirits; the selection may change. A visit includes a tour of local wine production and a wine tasting with views of the vineyards. Check booking requirements and availability before your trip.

The Seetal E-Bike FoodTrail is a bookable experience featuring culinary delights and puzzles. Along the way, you discover the next food stop. The 41-kilometre route runs from Lenzburg to Gelfingen. The train journey back to Lenzburg takes around 50 minutes; the train ticket is included even if you do not use an e-bike. Booking details may change, so it is advisable to check them in advance.

Getting there by train

The S9 connects Gelfingen with Lucerne and Lenzburg and generally runs every half hour. Check the current timetable before travelling. This makes it easy to plan your train journey, whether you want to focus your stay in Gelfingen on the castle, hiking trails, wine experiences or the lake.
