Lysekil lies on the coast of Bohuslän, where the Gullmarn Fjord opens out to the sea. In the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve, the meeting of sea and granite cliffs shapes the landscape. Lysekil also offers signposted town walks, an aquarium and historic sites. This makes it possible to plan a stay combining coastal walks, marine life and insights into local history.

Granite Coast and Paths by the Water

Several marked trails run through the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve. In the northern part, an accessible trail leads from a parking area to a viewpoint. If you want to plan time outdoors, you will find a choice of trails within the reserve and a specific viewpoint as a destination. As accessible infrastructure can change, check its current condition before your visit.

The coastal landscape also reveals itself from different perspectives on the water. On a kayak or canoe trip, you can paddle along the green coast of the Gullmarn Fjord, pass the granite cliffs at Islandsberg and Stångehuvud, and head towards the outer archipelago on the Västerhavet. Local operators in the Lysekil area also offer seal safaris, fishing trips, kayaking, snorkelling and diving. These activities depend on participating operators and the season.

Shellfish experiences include opportunities to fish for shellfish yourself, haul crabs and lobsters from the pots, and harvest oysters and mussels. Here too, the experiences available depend on participating operators and the season. If you are planning these activities, check the specific offers in advance.

Marine Life at Havets Hus

The Havets Hus aquarium combines display aquariums of various sizes and tunnel aquariums with information about the species on view. The route takes visitors from the shore through different West Sea habitats to the deep seabed. The visit thus focuses on both the animals and the succession of marine habitats.

In summer, Havets Hus offers activities including seal safaris and night walks. As these are seasonal activities, it is a good idea to check the dates before your visit. Together with activities offered by local operators, the theme of the sea opens up a range of possibilities: from viewing species in the aquariums to experiences on or by the water.

Town Walks and Coastal Route

Lysekil has four signposted town walks, ranging from 2 to 5.5 kilometres. This range gives you a guide when choosing between different walk lengths. The red town walk starts at Rosvikstorg, passes through the guest harbour and by the Havets Hus aquarium, and continues towards the Vikarvet Museum.

The Västerhavspromenaden offers a different sequence of stops: it leads from Lysekil’s South and North Harbours via Ålevik, Lilla Långevik, Stora Långevik and Valbodalen back to the centre. The entire promenade is accessible. Check the current condition of the infrastructure before your visit. While the red walk links the harbour, aquarium and museum as landmarks, the Västerhavspromenaden passes several named coastal locations on its way back to the centre.

Gamlestan, the Museum and Sporting History

Lysekil began to grow in the Gamlestan area as early as the 16th century. On a historical walk, you can explore its cobbled streets and narrow lanes. The Vikarvet Museum offers insights into life on the Bohuslän coast in the past and presents the history of fishing and the canning industry. It thus complements walks through Gamlestan with themes from working and everyday life on the coast.

Another part of local history can be seen at Gullmarsvallen. The sports ground is surrounded by a granite wall built by unemployed stonemasons in the 1930s. In 2003, the Swedish Sports Confederation, Riksidrottsförbundet, ranked Gullmarsvallen as one of Sweden’s 100 most important sites of sporting history. The wall thus connects the granite visible on site with Lysekil’s history of stone masonry.
