Grundsund is a well-preserved fishing village on Skaftö. Sheds and small houses crowd along the cliffs, the quay and the harbour canal. This gives your stay two clear highlights: the village setting and its history, and the coastal trails.

Fishing Village and Local History

The older parts of Grundsund on both sides of the canal are within settlement areas and surroundings protected by municipal development plans. The historic character therefore applies to areas on both sides of the canal, not just to individual houses. A chapel in Grundsund was built in 1799. The church took on its present cruciform layout during a major renovation in 1893.

Culture and local history can also be explored through specific places: the cinema on Skaftö is located in Folkets Hus in Grundsund and occasionally screens films there. Much of the TV series Saltön was filmed on Skaftö, particularly in Grundsund. On the Kuststigen section between Fiskebäckskil and Grundsund, the old cholera cemetery is a particularly noteworthy place.

Coastal Trails and Hikes

The seaside promenades between Skäddhålan and the bathing area at Vigerna run along the rocks and coastline. This section includes views of the rocky skerries, a cave and information boards about the landscape. Comparing trails by difficulty reveals different levels of challenge: an easy hiking trail leads from Grundsund towards Islandsberg, while Skuddevigeleden is a difficult nature trail.

Skuddevigeleden crosses the hills of Ösö and connects Skutevik with the continuing trail towards Hårsäckan. Along the way, there are views of the sea and the offshore archipelago. From the village and from Stockevik, you can reach the start of Munkeviksleden at the foot of Åseberget on foot or by bike via the coastal path. The trailhead is near the cholera cemetery.

Bathing Areas and Water Activities

Munkevik bathing area is between Grundsund and Stockevik. From Grundsund, you can reach Munkevik via the seaside promenades and Munkeviksleden, or by taking the shared cycling and pedestrian path to Stockevik. The bathing area has a larger-stone seabed and also includes a designated barbecue spot. As facilities at the bathing area may change, it is a good idea to check the current conditions shortly before your visit.

At Hårsäckan, there are stairs with handrails. Good swimming skills are required for bathing, so the spot is not suitable for children. This restriction is important when choosing a bathing area and should not be confused with the conditions at the rocky Munkevik bathing area.

For kayaking activities around Skaftö, Balanspunkten – Kajak i Grundsund offers rentals, courses and guided tours. Courses take place in small groups, with safety drills as a core part of the training. The options therefore vary by format: you can rent a kayak, take a course or choose a guided tour.

Skaftöguiden offers cultural-history and themed walks in Grundsund. Guided nature walks are available year-round. At the guest harbour, mooring options vary by quay: Östra Kajen has alongside berths, while Västra Kajen has stern-line berths.

Stairs, paths and jetties in Grundsund may not be blocked off or made private. This keeps paths to the moorings close to the houses accessible.
